He’s the ultimate shape-shifter, and to add a twist, he’s even decided to trade in his villain card to play nice with Batman in a quest to save Gotham. Who knew bad guys could have a change of heart?
Mike Flanagan’s Clayface Adventure
When it was announced that horror aficionado, Mike Flanagan, was crafting a Clayface movie for the DC Universe (you know, the one with all those brooding superheroes), fans were intrigued. And let’s not forget that Clayface has already made a splash in the animated series
Creature Commandos. But here’s where it gets juicy! Peter Safran, the co-head honcho of DC Studios, stirred the pot by dropping this spicy tidbit: the character Tom Rhys Harries portrays is the same Clayface from the animated series, just at a different time. I mean, how confusing can you get? It’s like having your cake and eating it too—unless you forgot where you put the fork!

Creature Commandos, penned by the other DC big shot, James Gunn, we follow a cast of supernatural oddballs. Their mission? After some fracas, Flag “defeats” Clayface, or so he thought. You know how these supervillains love pulling a fast one!
The Tragic Tune of Matt Hagen
As Flanagan and director James Watkins spill the tea about the upcoming flick, they reveal that Matt Hagen, our soon-to-be Clayface, isn’t just a regular joe. He’s a tragic figure trying to reclaim his past glory—like a washed-up actor on a comeback tour! After being on the business end of a grudge from a gangster, he turns to a funky experimental serum to rejuvenate his face (let’s hope it’s not like botched plastic surgery!). But uh-oh! The serum gives him crazy powers and also a little too much temptation. It’s a slippery slope between gaining abilities and losing his grip on reality!
A Horror Comedy Mash-Up!
Harries, the guy playing Matt, paints a picture of a wild ride— a horror thriller that questions how far you’d go to get back what you had. But if you recall the more laid-back Clayface from
Creature Commandos, you might wonder if it’s the same guy! In the series, Clayface was just a chill dude trading barbs online while munching on nachos. He was hardly the deep, tortured soul we’re being promised now.
A Colorful Cast of Clayfaces
If you sift through comic lore, you’ll quickly find that Hagen isn’t the only one to don the Clayface mantle. There’s a treasure hunter whose body turned into a gooey mess courtesy of some mysterious ooze. Then we have the scientist Preston Payne—let’s remember, every mad scientist has a twisted backstory—who had his own transformation saga, followed by Lady Clay (a.k.a. Sondra Fuller), and many more! The Big Question: Why Not a Different Clayface?
Despite James Watkins admitting they’re blending and borrowing from many Clayface iterations, one can’t help but ask: why not pick a different version of this malleable character for the film? Maybe to dodge the head-scratching comparisons with
Creature Commandos? Neither Safran, Flanagan, nor Watkins have clued us in, but hey, maybe it’s best not to overthink superhero shenanigans!
The Ups and Downs of Superhero Stories
Ultimately, Clayface exemplifies that superheroes can, and often do, evolve. Just like how Batman can swing from gritty noir to campy fun, Clayface can shift shapes and morality.
