So, imagine our surprise when the horror genius Mike Flanagan announced he’s penning a flick about our favorite shapeshifter, Clayface, for the DCU! Now, you might be scratching your head because didn’t we just see a version of this character slop around in season one of Creature Commandos? Spoiler alert: we did! But according to Peter Safran, big cheese over at DC Studios, it’s the same Clayface we saw before, just taking a little detour. Confusing? Maybe. But it’s all part of DC’s delightful chaos!
Meet the Commandos
In Creature Commandos, written by the notorious James Gunn, this band of misfits is like a zany version of the Suicide Squad; only instead of anti-heroes with cool haircuts, we’ve got an ensemble of monsters taking a cozy trip to save a small European country from the gripping clutches of Circe, a Wonder Woman villain with a flair for drama.
In a plot twist worthy of a soap opera, team leader Rick Flag, portrayed by the oh-so-charming Frank Grillo, discovers that Clayface (voiced by Alan Tudyk, because of course) has been impersonating a professor as part of a sneaky little scheme. Flag and friends take him down in a not-so-pretty battle that leaves Clayface, well, quite squished. It’s like that last piece of pizza at a party; one way or another, it’s going down!
A Tragic Transformation
Now, for the upcoming Clayface movie—hold onto your hats—Flanagan and director James Watkins are painting us the picture of a tragic hero. Inspired by the animated classic “Feat of Clay” and the comic Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on Serious Earth, we meet struggling actor Matt Hagen. This guy is doing everything short of cartwheels trying to reclaim his lost looks after a gangster has a seriously bad day with a carving knife. Enter an experimental serum that does something magical to his body but also gives his darker urges a run for their money!
