VisionQuest Sneaks in a Cameo from Ultron’s Glory Days
Well, well, well! Looks like Marvel’s VisionQuest is playing peekaboo with some nostalgia this week. Spoiler alert: we’re diving into episode 6, and if you haven’t seen it, what are you still doing here?
So, here’s the scoop: eagle-eyed fans of VisionQuest noticed something shiny on their screens. Twitter exploded with rumors that those glowing dots on a monitor were none other than Uatu, the Watcher! You know, that cosmic dude who can only watch the universe’s antics unfold from a safe distance without ever getting involved. Give yourselves a pat on the back, folks; you were not seeing things! Terry Matalas, the showrunner, confirmed it. Bravo, everyone!
The Big Question: Who’s Watching the Watcher?
This brings us to the pressing question: who’s been tuning in to What If…? Because if you’ve been keeping up with Marvel’s alternate reality shenanigans, you’ll know our cosmic friend has reasons for checking in on Ultron. And let’s just say, things could get messy in the MCU!
For a bit of comic book history, Uatu made his grand debut during Galactus’s arrival in the classic 1968 Fantastic Four #48-50. It was like the universe’s version of a tornado warning. Ever since then, whenever the Watcher shows up, you know it’s time for some major cosmic event.
The Watcher’s Role in the Multiverse
The Watcher was the star of the show in the anthology series What If…?, making his presence known since 1977. In each issue, he’d give readers a grand tour of the multiverse where they witnessed wacky variations of iconic events. What if Wolverine decided to take Hulk out on their first meeting? What if Captain America swapped his shield for a presidential podium? What if Uncle Ben pulled a surprise party instead of, you know, the opposite? You get the drift.
What If…? on Disney+ followed this charmingly chaotic template, as Jeffrey Wright lent his soothing voice to the Watcher, guiding viewers through worlds where T’Challa became Star-Lord instead of Peter Quill. Most episodes felt like fun little brain teasers—great but easy to forget.
The Ultron Saga
However, things got serious when Ultron entered the picture in a multi-episode arc. Specifically, “What If… Ultron Had Won?” showed a dystopian world where Ultron crushed the Avengers and unleashed nuclear weapons like he was playing Call of Duty. Thanos came knocking for the Mind Stone but quickly found himself on Ultron’s dinner menu, too.
With the Infinity Gauntlet now in his metallic paws, Ultron spots the Watcher (cue dramatic music) and promptly starts throwing his weight around, creating chaos across the multiverse. Sounds like a fun Saturday night, right? This culminated in an epic showdown in the finale, “What If… the Watcher Broke His Oath?”, where the Watcher dusted off his superhero cape and got in on the action, rallying heroes and villains to take Ultron down.
Back to VisionQuest
Now, circling back to VisionQuest, since the arrival of What If…?, the Watcher has been popping up like an unwanted fungus in various MCU projects. He’s been spotted during Genosha’s destruction in the new season of X-Men ’97 and even got a front-row seat for Vanessa Fisk’s unfortunate demise in Daredevil: Born Again.
This time around, he appears on a monitor as Vision’s AI watches Ultron woo Jocasta. You heard that right! Ultron’s got game, and he’s sealing the deal with a promise to wipe out humanity. Romantic, huh?
So, the burning question is: is the Watcher around for some cosmic babysitting as the series gears up for its finale? Or does he have some inside knowledge of Ultron’s imminent danger? Only two more episodes of VisionQuest will tell!
VisionQuest releases new episodes every Wednesday on Disney+. Don’t miss out on the cosmic fun!
