Hold Onto Your Deerstalkers!
Guess what, folks? The infamous James Moriarty, the thorn in Sherlock Holmes’ side, is about to star in his very own series! Yep, you heard that right! Produced by Fremantle—who also brought us the quirky film
Poor Things—and Archery Productions, known for
Operation Mincemeat, this new twist on the classic villain is set to be a hoot!
The Double Life of a Professor
This time around, Moriarty is no longer just a shadowy figure plotting evil deeds from the comfort of his lair. Instead, he’s taking on a dual role as a professor at Durham University and the genius behind a series of elaborate crimes that are giving Northern England a run for its money. How’s that for a shocking plot twist? He’s so slick that he even joins the police as a consultant, trying to take down another criminal mastermind who’s stepping on his turf. I mean, can you say plot twist?
Secrets, Lies, and Detectives
But here’s the scoop: Moriarty has to keep his true identity under wraps while working alongside Yorkshire detective Imogen Burrows. Together, they’ll face off against a real threat—no, not his archrival, but something much more sinister. Sounds like a wild ride, doesn’t it?
More Moriarty, Please!
Now, while we’ve seen heaps of Sherlock adaptations lately, let’s be real: none have focused on Moriarty himself quite like this. You might remember the recent
Young Sherlock series on Prime Video, where Dónal Finn portrayed the ‘young, edgy’ Moriarty. But this new series is breaking new ground by giving us a live-action glimpse into the mind of the notorious criminal for the very first time. The anime
Moriarty the Patriot tried to peel back those layers a bit, but this one’s set to go even deeper!
The Beginnings of a Legend
Now, for a little history lesson: The character of Professor Moriarty was first brought to life in Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s 1893 tale,
The Adventure of the Final Problem. Sherlock dubbed him the “Napoleon of Crime,” which is quite a title! Interestingly enough, he was inspired by a real-life thief named Adam Worth, who had quite the notorious reputation himself, including stealing a portrait from a famous gallery in London. Now that’s some juicy gossip!
A Character for All Seasons
Over the years, we’ve seen so many interpretations of our beloved Moriarty. Andrew Scott’s portrayal in BBC’s
Sherlock (2010-2017) nabbed him a BAFTA award, while Jared Harris took a crack at the role in
Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows alongside the ever-charismatic
Robert Downey Jr. But wait, there’s more! Female adaptations have also graced our screens, with Natalie Dormer as Jamie Moriarty in
Elementary and Sharon Duncan-Brewster stepping into the shoes of Mira Troy in
Enola Holmes 2.
The Big Question
So, the burning question remains: who will don the cape (or should I say, the cunning grin) of Moriarty in this thrilling new series? Keep your eyes peeled, because it looks like the game is on!
