Clayface Trailer Teases Other Batman Villains
Gotham City is Calling, and Clayface is Answering!
Okay, fellow Gothamites, gather ’round! We’ve got some news that might just be juicier than a Bat-Signal pizza party. Unfortunately, the Bat-tastic Matt Reeves has decided to keep us waiting until 2028 for The Batman: Part II. I know, I know, major bummer, right? But fret not, my dark knight friends, because we’re not being banished from our beloved Gotham just yet!
Before the Caped Crusader swoops back into action, we’ll be graced with the slippery charm of Clayface! This villainous shapeshifter is stepping into the spotlight, and boy, do we have some freaky fun ahead! The film revolves around our man, Matt Hagen (played by the talented Tom Rhys Harries), an actor who ends up looking like a melted candle after a little mishap with an experimental serum courtesy of a shady mobster.
A Terrifying Teaser
Now, let’s talk about the trailer that’s been making waves like a Batmoblie splashing through puddles. This sneak peek not only cranks up the horror factor to eleven, but it introduces us to a mad scientist named Caitlyn Corr (Naomi Ackie) and a hard-nosed detective from the rough side of Gotham (Max Minghella). And, boy, do we see our guy Hagen trying to keep his gooey bits from falling apart. It’s squishy, it’s messy, and dare I say, it’s downright thrilling!
Amongst the body horror, you’ll spot a familiar haunt in Gotham—Club Vesuvius! This isn’t just any club; it’s a hotspot for the dastardly and the dangerous, featuring baddies like Black Mask and Firefly. Yes, the club has wooed mischief-makers long before this flick rolled into town!
Club Vesuvius: A Gotham Gem
What’s so special about Club Vesuvius, you ask? Well, pour yourself a poison Ivy cocktail because this club has a history. Mostly a background player, it’s been home to Zatanna’s mesmerizing magic shows and the shady dealings of small-time hustler Johnny Sabatino. But in the 2009 comic series, Batman: Streets of Gotham, the club struts back into the limelight with some serious drama on the dance floor.
In this arc, Batman and Robin were hot on the trail of the rich and famous, running into our old friend Firefly who was hiding out in Vesuvius. Meanwhile, Black Mask had gifted this flaming venue to Firefly, leading to epic confrontations and, let’s face it, a lot of fiery chaos as Firefly decided to take his vendetta out on Gotham. You knew it was going down when the Bat duo arrived to save the day!
Why Clayface Might Just Fire Up Your Excitement
Now you might wonder, why the sudden focus on a club that’s about as forgotten as last year’s eggnog? Well, it turns out Clayface’s writer, Mike Flanagan, is a big fan of the classic Batman: The Animated Series episode titled “Feat of Clay,” which gives a nod to the character designs that scream nostalgia. The same guy who wrote Streets of Gotham? Oh yes, our buddy Paul Dini is back in the mix!
So, is the inclusion of Club Vesuvius just a fun little Easter egg or a clever way to sneak in Black Mask and Firefly into the new DC universe? Only time will tell, but for those of us desperately awaiting the return of Batman, we think more villainy is always a win!
