Buffy’s Love Life: A Complicated Affair

Hey there, fellow Scooby gang members! So, it looks like Chloé Zhao, the genius director of Hamnet and the upcoming Buffy the Vampire Slayer revival, has weighed in on one of the biggest debates since the dawn of time: Team Spike or Team Angel? Spoiler alert: neither option is ideal for our girl Buffy Summers. I mean, come on! When Angel sauntered into town, Buffy was a mere 16 while he was an ancient 240. Talk about a big age gap! And let’s not even start on the whole “turning evil during a happy moment” thing. Yikes!

Spike vs. Angel: Pick Your Poison

Then we’ve got Spike, who’s just as old and even more explosive. Seriously, how do you choose between a brooding vampire with a dark past and a leather-clad bad boy with a serious attitude? It’s a real head-scratcher! But good ol’ Chloé admitted she was a total fan of the Buffy-Spike ship in her younger days. Now that she’s hit her 40s, she’s shaking things up and leaning toward Riley. Yes, folks, Riley! The man we all loved to hate! Who would have thought?

Riley: The Unsung Hero?

Chloé confessed that in her youthful naivety, she thought Riley was “boring.” But now, she’s all like, “Maybe less Spike and more Riley.” Who knew? Riley Finn, played by Marc Blucas, was the human boyfriend everyone loved to overlook during seasons 4 and 5. Sure, he was a military dude with a penchant for rules and paranoia over Buffy’s affection, but let’s cut the guy some slack! While Buffy was busy juggling classes, her mom’s mysterious illness, a magical sister, and her Slayer responsibilities, Riley was like, “Why don’t I get enough love?” Poor dude just wanted his feelings acknowledged while dodging vampires.

A New Direction for the Revival

Now, don’t think we’re just here to pity Riley. In some parallel universe, he could be the best pick from a questionable bunch! But amidst all this Riley talk, we can breathe easy knowing the revival is in good hands with Zhao. She did an adorable thing when she discovered Sarah Michelle Gellar didn’t keep the iconic Class Protector umbrella from the original series’ third season prom episode. Instead, Zhao had one made just for her and even delivered Jonathan Levinson’s legendary line, “We’re not good friends” in front of the team. How cute is that?

So, what’s the takeaway? Buffy‘s romantic choices, much like a funky rollercoaster, have their ups and downs, but hey, it’s all part of the fun in this monster-hunting universe!
