Introduction to Widow’s Bay

The horror-comedy sensation Widow’s Bay has officially snagged a second season on Apple TV, and its creator, Katie Dippold, is spilling the beans on how it all came together. Spoiler alert: it started out as something a little different!

From Comedy to Creepy

Believe it or not, Dippold’s first draft was more in line with Parks & Recreation, sprouting gags like weeds in the summer. “I originally wrote Widow’s Bay as a spec script for Parks & Recreation, but it ended up being way jokier,” Dippold shared. She’s not sure if she would’ve peeked into that version of the show, saying it might’ve come off as a spoof. As a big horror junkie herself, she wanted the audience to feel like they were tangled up in the island’s creepy vibes.

The Haunted Inspiration

“I wanted to immerse viewers in New England, feeling isolated and itching to explore the island’s scariest spots,” Dippold admitted. Sounds like her childhood trips to a wild boardwalk in New Jersey had a significant influence. She wasn’t just terrified—she was completely enchanted by the chaos!

The Plot Twist

The show follows the misadventures of Mayor Tom Loftis, played by the talented Matthew Rhys. He’s got his hands full trying to turn his cursed New England island town into the newest hotspot for tourists while dealing with some seriously spooky residents. Whether it’s a local sea hag or a hopeful reunion with the ever-elusive Boogeyman, all sorts of hilarious and hair-raising shenanigans unfold.

Childhood Memories Meets Screen

Dippold draws from her own fearless experiences as a kid. “I remember running around that boardwalk, all wide-eyed with excitement and a little bit of danger, wanting to see every creepy nook and cranny!” she reminisced. “I’d scream and laugh and scream some more—an emotional rollercoaster of joy and fright that I just wanted to bottle up and share with viewers.”

What’s Next?

As Widow’s Bay prepares to wrap up its first season on June 17, it’s clear that this show is a delightful blend of comedy and horror that keeps us on our toes—and laughing all the way to the edge of our seats!
