The Strange New Worlds Team Still Wants to Make Star Trek: Year One
Celebrating 60 Years of Star Trek!
Can you believe it? Our beloved Star Trek is hitting the big 6-0 this year! However, before you grab your party hats, let’s face it: the franchise seems to be in a bit of a time warp, stuck in a holding pattern at the moment. The cameras have finally stopped rolling on the second season of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, leaving us in a void of no new Trek in the works or even on the horizon. Sad trombone!
What’s Slowing the Star Trek Train?
Now, don’t panic just yet! There are plenty of reasons that aren’t as doom and gloom as they might sound. Our pals over at Star Trek: Strange New Worlds finished up filming their fifth and final season last December, but we still have two delicious seasons yet to feast our eyes on (one of which is a bit on the slimmer side). Plus, with parent network Paramount busy merging with Skydance and eyeing Warner Bros, it’s likely that Star Trek might be a wee bit lower on their priority list than we’d like. But hey, behind closed doors, talks about the future are still happening, so keep your fingers crossed!
Will Year One Beam Us Up?
Now, here’s where it gets spicy! You may have heard the chatter about Star Trek: Year One, a proposed series that aims to continue where Strange New Worlds is likely to leave off. Picture this: we dive into the earliest days of Captain James T. Kirk’s epic command of the U.S.S. Enterprise. And guess what? A truckload of our favorite legacy characters from Star Trek: The Original Series are already part of the Strange New Worlds crew, like Kirk, Spock, and Uhura. Oh boy! We’re in for a ride! Plus, the series finale will give us a shiny new Doctor McCoy and Hikaru Sulu to spice things up even more. I mean, talk about planting the seeds for saucy new stories!
The Pitch
In a recent chat with the folks at TrekMovie during the Saturn Awards, Henry Alonso Myers, the shuffler of Strange New Worlds, spilled the beans that they’ve officially pitched Year One to the Power Rangers at Paramount. “We believe it would be an absolute gem! The next chapter in the Star Trek saga, for sure! But it’s now out of our hands,” he mentioned. “We brought them so many goodies; now they just need to unwrap and enjoy! There’s a lot of love for our show, and of course, unlimited love for Star Trek!”
What’s Happening on Set?
Now, before you start panic-buying Star Trek memorabilia, let’s look at some hopeful signs. For starters, the Enterprise sets from Strange New Worlds are still chilling at CBS Stages Canada in Toronto, looking as fab as ever. “Our sets have not been vaporized just yet. That’s a reassuring sign!” Myers confirmed. “The big decision for them now is whether to keep the sets or not. So, fingers crossed they’ve got plans to use them!”
Only Time Will Tell
But in classic Star Trek fashion, we just have to wait and see what the universe decides. After all, many creatives involved with Star Trek: Picard have been pushing for a Star Trek: Legacy sequel after its conclusion in 2023, and yet here we are, in a waiting game. Might Captain Kirk’s legacy be the twist that sways the decision-makers? The idea of launching Year One during the 60th-anniversary celebration has a neat symmetry to it, harkening back to the inception of this stellar journey. Will Paramount take the plunge? Only time will tell, folks! So, who’s placing their bets?
