Star Crushes Fan Hopes for Star Trek: Legacy Series
Star Trek’s Current Voyage
Ahoy, Star Trek fans! Our beloved franchise is currently floating in a bit of a space limbo. We’ve still got not one, but two more thrilling seasons of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds on the way, along with a brand new second season of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy that’s already in the can. But here’s the kicker—it’s the first time in a decade that we don’t have a fresh Trek series in the works. Yep, you heard that right!
What’s Next in the Final Frontier?
Despite the holding pattern, the Star Trek universe is buzzing with possibilities! There might be a third season of Starfleet Academy on the horizon, plus a follow-up to Strange New Worlds nicknamed Star Trek: Year One. But wait—what fans are really pinning their hopes on is the potential of a series called Star Trek: Legacy. This spin-off would continue the journeys of our dear starship Enterprise, helmed by none other than Jeri Ryan’s enchanting Seven of Nine. But alas, it seems our dreams might be dashed!
Marina Sirtis: The Voice of Reality
At a recent panel aboard Star Trek: The Cruise, former Next Generation star Marina Sirtis dropped a truth bomb that sent waves of despair through the crowd. “First of all,” she said dramatically, “Legacy is never gonna happen!” This proclamation was met with gasps from the audience and an astonished look from her on-screen hubby, Jonathan Frakes.
She continued, “The reality is that no studio in America is going to create a series featuring the majority of its main cast over 70 years old. It’s just Hollywood.” Ouch! That’s a hard pill to swallow, right?
Hope Springs Eternal
Now, while Sirtis may have a point, let’s remember that the concept of Legacy doesn’t *have* to rely heavily on the original crew. Sure, the legendary Picard’s son, Jack Crusher (played by Ed Speelers), is a big player in the mix, but we’ve met a whole gaggle of new characters in Picard—including Geordi La Forge’s daughters and Troi and Riker’s kiddo! And let’s not forget Data’s “daughter” Soji still roaming the galaxy!
Wouldn’t we all jump for joy at the sight of our favorite Next Generation characters popping by for a cameo? Yes, please! But truthfully, new characters could totally keep the ship sailing smoothly without the need for frequent guest appearances from the old guard.
The Cosmic Rollercoaster of Fate
Real talk: The finale of Picard aired back in 2023, and the momentum for any new Trek spinoff appears to have hit the brakes. Former showrunner Terry Matalas has been swooped up by other projects, like Marvel’s VisionQuest. And with all the drama at Paramount following their merger with Skydance and their pursuit of Warner Bros., it’s not looking great for a new show like Legacy.
Yet, in the spirit of Star Trek, let’s keep the hope meter switched to ‘high.’ Just a few years ago, who would’ve dreamt we’d see Picard resurrected with a majority of the original cast back aboard for an epic send-off? In this galaxy, anything is possible! So, fellow Trekkies, hold on to your phasers and keep your eyes on the stars!
