Sender Cast On Turning Online Deliveries Into Existential Horror

When Horror Meets Online Shopping

Let’s face it: horror movies have an uncanny knack for turning our everyday lives into a nightmare. Remember Psycho? Who would take a shower again after that? Or A Nightmare on Elm Street? Suddenly, snoozing seems like a dangerous game! And what about Midsommar? Now every trip to Scandinavia feels a bit sketchy.

With his latest flick Sender, writer and director Russell Goldman is aiming for the ultimate scare: online shopping. Yes, that innocent internet experience we all love might just have a sprinkle of horror!

The Brushing Scam: Just What Is It?

So what’s the deal with Sender? It dives into the bizarre world of “brushing scams.” You know, when you suddenly get random items in the mail that you never ordered? Goldman’s got the scoop: “Somebody, totally for no good reason, sends you cheap stuff based on your online browsing history. They’re just trying to inflate ratings for these products by slapping your name on glowing reviews!” Isn’t that a bit like the internet playing tricks on us?

Star Power and Private Horror

Joining the ride is none other than Hollywood queen Jamie Lee Curtis, who isn’t just acting in the movie; she’s the executive producer! Curtis has a personal connection to these scams—her sister once called her up bewildered over a surprise gift of walking sticks. Spoiler: it wasn’t from Jamie! Turns out it was from some shady Iowa address. Talk about an unexpected birthday surprise!

Paranoia Takes the Lead

Russell Goldman was also inspired by his own experience. Imagine buying a cute dress for your partner and receiving dirty sports gear instead! Yep, that was his bizarre reality and he thought, “This is perfect material for a movie… especially during a pandemic when paranoia and package-watching were on high alert!”

The Mind Games Begin

As if the plot couldn’t get any more intense, our lead character Julia, played by Britt Lower (of Severance fame), is on a journey to sobriety. But in that quest for a quieter life, she finds herself ordering things online—only to be bombarded by packages she never intended to buy. Now that’s a real life spiral!

Getting Packages: A Double-Edged Sword

Now, while Julia is wrestling with paranoia, her on-screen sister, Tatiana (Anna Baryshnikov), views deliveries with nostalgia. “For me, packages mean goodies, like the time my parents received a perfect popcorn tin around the holidays!” She jokes about her emotional shopping habits and how lively pajamas make a world of difference when you’re feeling down.

And Then There’s David…

Now, not all package stories are rosy. Co-star David Dastmalchian once opened a delivery to find… you guessed it: dirty underwear! He quips about his stepdad screening his mail to keep the weird stuff at bay. Can you imagine? “Thanks, Dad, for saving me from the horrors of the post!”

The Horror is Real

After hearing all these stories, maybe Sender isn’t conjuring new fears but rather spotlighting the bizarre and slightly dreadful experiences we’re already going through with online shopping. Yikes!

Sender premiered on March 14 at the SXSW Film & TV Festival, proving that the only thing scarier than the movie might just be our own mailboxes!
