Ronny Yu: Where Have You Been?
So, it’s been a hot minute since Ronny Yu, the mastermind behind the chilling
Bride of Chucky, has directed a full-length feature. The last time we saw him at the helm was back in 2013 with
Saving General Yang. But guess what? Robert Englund, the dude who brought Freddy Krueger to life in
A Nightmare on Elm Street, thinks it’s high time Ronny makes a grand return to horror!
Bring Back the Scares, Ronny!
Englund is practically begging for a new creation from Ronny Yu. He reminisced about the good ol’ days when they collaborated on
Freddy vs. Jason in 2003. “Ronny has such a knack for that edgy, graphic-novel-style horror,” he gushed. After all, who wouldn’t want to sip giant cups of French coffee while watching scary movies in France?
Has Ronny Really Retired?
At 75, some might think Ronny Yu has hung up his director’s hat for good. Not quite! He previously mentioned that he’s not ready to kick back and retire just yet. In fact, he’s even expressed interest in diving back into the Chucky franchise and hinted at a new sci-fi flick in the works, saying, “Never retire; I’m lazy!”
A Career of Twists and Turns
“Lazy” is the last word that should be associated with Ronny Yu’s career. Born in Hong Kong in 1950, he fought through childhood polio, which influenced his creativity and love for filmmaking. After a brief stint studying business in the U.S., he jumped into the film industry in Hong Kong during the late ’70s.
From Hong Kong to Hollywood
Over the years, Ronny made a name for himself with films like
The Servant and
The Occupant. He broke onto the international scene in 1993 with
The Bride with White Hair and then took the
Hollywood plunge with entries in the
Chucky and
Friday the 13th series. Talk about a glow up!
Does He Even Like Horror?
While horror is a major part of his filmography, Yu has dabbled in many genres. His 2006 flick
Fearless was the box office champ in Hong Kong that year. He even worked with the legendary Samuel L. Jackson on
The 51st State and was supposed to direct
Snakes on a Plane. But after being replaced, he has a fantasy about how different that film could have been, including a killer twist! (Get it? Killer? Like a shark movie!)
Final Thoughts
Whether Ronny decides to slip back into the horror genre or not, we’re all on board with Englund – let’s make this happen! We’d love to see Ronny Yu back in action, giving us chills and thrills like the good old days!
