Ridley Scott’s The Dog Stars Trailer Imagines a Hopeful Post-Apocalypse

April 17, 2026

Welcome to the Apocalypse!

For the last couple of decades, we’ve been on a wild ride imagining the end of the world. Seriously, it’s like a never-ending episode of a doomsday reality show! From emotional roller coasters like The Hunger Games to all the zombie shenanigans in The Walking Dead, not to forget the icy ride of Snowpiercer, pop culture just can’t get enough of civilization crumbling like a cheap sandwich.

Enter The Dog Stars

But wait! The fresh trailer for The Dog Stars rolled out and it seems director Ridley Scott is flipping the script. Say hello to Jacob Elordi who plays Hig, a hopeful pilot trying to navigate this post-apocalyptic mess with only his dog by his side – the last piece of his pre-apocalypse happy home. His partner-in-survival, Bangley, played by Josh Brolin, is as warm and fuzzy as a block of ice. Meanwhile, Hig’s looking for a spark of joy in the charming medic, Cima (hi there, Margaret Qualley!). And guess what? The whole thing is accompanied by a laid-back version of Van Morrison’s “Into the Mystic.” Who knew doom could sound so cheerful?

A Literary Gem

The heartwarming vibes are thanks to the original 2012 novel by Peter Heller. This book didn’t just dive deep into the typical post-apocalyptic tropes; it also had a good chuckle or two, balancing humanity’s dark sides with moments of genuine humor. If Scott can nail that whimsical yet poetic vibe on screen, The Dog Stars could be just the cherry on top of his glorious filmography.

Perfect Timing for a Feel-Good Flick

Now is a prime time for such a movie! Audiences are eager to find a sliver of hope at the end of this long, dark tunnel. Just look at how well Project Hail Mary, based on Andy Weir’s book, has treated viewers lately. It’s pure buddy comedy magic, featuring Ryan Gosling and his quirky puppet pal, all against an impending doom backdrop that makes you laugh and cringe at the same time. Turns out that a good friendship can be the ultimate apocalypse survival tool!

Can Ridley Keep It Light?

But let’s not kid ourselves—Project Hail Mary was directed by the playful duo Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, known for their carefree vibe. Ridley Scott? Not exactly a jolly fellow! This is the man who turned a spaceship into a horror story in Alien and gave us some pretty gloomy vibes in Blade Runner, not to mention the chaotic madness of Black Hawk Down. And let’s face it: even the supposedly uplifting ending of Thelma & Louise has them taking a wild cliff dive.

A Ray of Hope

That said, Scott did direct The Martian, a flick that was surprisingly upbeat for a story about being stranded. If he can keep that light-hearted tone for The Dog Stars, we might just find ourselves basking in some positivity amidst all the chaos. Fingers crossed for another box office hit!

Release Date Alert!

So mark your calendars, folks! The Dog Stars will be flying into theaters on August 28, 2026. Don’t miss it!
