The Senior: A True Story Worth Telling

When veteran actor Michael Chiklis was asked why he jumped into the football drama The Senior, he put it simply: “We’re all just looking for great stories out there.” He didn’t beat around the bush. He adds with a wink, “This isn’t just based on reality – this is the real deal!”

From Miami Vice to the Senior League

If you’re even a little familiar with Chiklis’s career, you’d know straightforward honesty is his style. From his early days on Miami Vice to stealing the spotlight as John Belushi in the biopic Wired, he’s done it all! He’s gone from playing a corrupt cop on The Shield (where he won an Emmy – no biggie!) to a carnival strongman in American Horror Story: Freak Show, and of course, let’s not forget his iconic role as the blue-eyed Thing in Fantastic Four and Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer.

Playing a 59-Year-Old College Footballer

In The Senior, Chiklis takes on the role of Mike Flynt, who played college football at a ripe age of fifty-nine. I mean, come on, there aren’t many people strutting their stuff on the college field at that age! Directed by Rod Lurie and penned by Robert Eisele, The Senior is a heartfelt crowd-pleaser that packs a punch of authenticity. That’s what got Chiklis all excited about it!

A Story of Redemption

Chiklis explains how he immerses himself in the world of storytelling: “You look for the ingredients of great narratives: struggle, conflict, redemption – all that jazz! And every bit of that is in this film.” He describes it as a classic tale of a guy trying to take back his life after flubbing it up in the past. Relatable, right?

Facing the Past

As he unwraps these themes, Chiklis casually hits you with the realization that we all have moments from our younger days we’d love to rewind. “There isn’t a soul on this planet who hasn’t thought about those cringeworthy past incidents!” He chuckles. “It’s like, ‘Why did I do that? Can I get a do-over?’”

More Than Just a Game

For Chiklis, The Senior resonates with a universal appeal that speaks humorously to even the biggest geeks out there (he might be talking about you!). “This isn’t just about Mike trying to get back into football; it’s about him helping those kids grow into fine young men!”

Lessons from Life

Drawing from his own life experiences, including memorable lessons from his high school football coaches, Chiklis recalls his own surprising twist at 59: returning to the college gridiron. “Who’d have thought I’d be out there downing Gatorade with kids in their twenties?” he laughs. He adds, “But let’s be honest, I wasn’t nearly as hardcore as Flynt!”

Life Imitates Art

Chiklis praises Flynt’s dedication during filming. “The guy didn’t even have a stunt double! Every tackle was the real deal!” he marvels. “We were literally on the field for twelve hours a day. And yes, I’m proud to admit I survived the grueling shoots without needing an ice pack!”

Different Shades of Gray

Chiklis nails it when he mentions the complexities of good and bad in characters. He compares Flynt to his dirty cop alter-ego, Vic Mackey from The Shield. “These nuanced characters are fascinating because they mirror us – we all have a bit of light and dark within.”

The Family Dynamic

Despite Flynt’s rough exterior, there’s a deeper emotional conflict at play. Chiklis portrays a man haunted by the violent legacy of his father, battling to break that negative cycle, and interestingly enough, it’s a beautiful redemption arc that grabs your heartstrings. “This isn’t just a sports movie; it’s about rooting for someone who is trying to better themselves and their family!” he excitedly explains.

Will He Be The Thing Again?

As Chiklis dives into talking about the ever-popular Thing from the Fantastic Four, you can almost hear fans holding their breath! “I get asked about it constantly. While I can’t say ‘never’ about putting that rock suit back on, I haven’t been asked yet.” But just when you think he’s done, he brings out his inner rock star with a cheeky line: “It could totally be clobberin’ time!”
