Outlander Boss Unleashes the Fun and Challenges Behind the Scenes
The Final Chapter of Outlander
Well, folks, it’s almost time to say goodbye to our favorite time-traveling nurse and her swoon-worthy Highlander! Starz’s legendary romp through history, Outlander, is wrapping things up this May, saying farewell after more than a decade of on-screen adventures, based on Diana Gabaldon’s wildly popular books. However, devising a fitting farewell has been nothing short of a wild ride, as showrunner Matthew B. Roberts spills the beans before the final season drops.
The Ever-Budding Challenge
Picture this: you think wrapping up a show will be like a cozy little stroll through the highlands. Surprise! It’s more like dodging a flurry of arrows while trying to pack a tent. According to Roberts, “We always thought it was going to get easier. We were wrong. It always got harder.” Who knew saying goodbye could be such a tricky business?
The Human Element
Roberts elaborates on the chaos of adaptation. Gabaldon has the magical ability to pull in any character she wants, whenever she wants. But for the Outlander crew, it’s like trying to herd cats—scheduling actors for arcs can feel like juggling flaming swords. If an actor isn’t available, you have to ask yourself, “How do we weave this tale without this character?” Yikes!
From Small Beginnings to Epic Adventures
What started as a charming story about former WWII nurse Claire Randall, played by the fabulous Caitríona Balfe, zipping back to 1743 and falling for the dashing Jamie Fraser (that’s Sam Heughan, in case you didn’t know), grew into an epic saga that spans continents. From the Scottish highlands to Parisian streets, and even to the warm climes of North Carolina, Outlander has ballooned, requiring tons of extras to make it all look fabulously realistic.
A Mountain of Challenges
Let’s not sugarcoat it—dragging hundreds of folks to different locations can be about as pleasant as a thorny rose. Roberts admits that time and budget constraints loom large over the process. “As Diana’s books upped the ante, the show had to do that as well.” Talk about pressure!
The Joy of Making Magic
But despite all the behind-the-scenes hurdles, making Outlander has been a thrilling adventure for Roberts. Just recently, while wrapping up the second season of the prequel series Blood of My Blood, his assistant gifted him a giant poster filled with crew photos from all the seasons of Outlander. Can you imagine how wild that was? From a tiny crew in season one to a massive ensemble in the final season—now that’s growth! It’s impressive to see how Outlander transformed not just the show, but the lives of everyone involved. “It was pretty astonishing to see that poster,” Roberts recalls with a twinkle in his eye.
The Countdown Begins!
So, mark your calendars! Outlander season 8 will be streaming on Starz starting March 6. Get ready for the ultimate farewell, because this rollercoaster of a series isn’t going out quietly!
