Her Private Hell: Drive Director Goes Greek Myth Noir in Trippy Trailer
Welcome to Her Private Hell!
This summer, we have a quirky filmmaker straight from Denmark, known for his offbeat crime flicks, serving up something fresh: a movie inspired by Greek mythology. Spoiler alert: it’s not the one where Odysseus gets lost for ten years and talks to a Cyclops. Nope, it’s the intriguing new film called Her Private Hell from the ever-eclectic Nicolas Winding Refn.
What’s in the Trailer?
Now, if you’re expecting toga-clad gods sipping ambrosia or heroic epic battles, think again! The trailer is more akin to Refn’s signature style, packed with stunningly attractive folks, neon lights that make you feel like you’ve just walked into a rave, and a soundtrack that’s anything but dull. There’s even a haunting voiceover about a woman who goes MIA, hinting at a modern twist on the classic story of Eurydice and Orpheus. Yep, that’s right, we’re taking a trip to the underworld folks!
Meet the Characters
Our heroine, Elle, played by Sophie Thatcher, is on a mission to find her missing dad in a city that’s been swallowed by a mysterious fog. Along her journey, she encounters the rugged Private K, portrayed by Charles Melton, who’s dealing with his own underworld drama involving his trapped daughter. And let’s not ignore the rest of the stunning cast including Havana Rose Liu and Diego Calva, who’s just eye candy on two legs, and the intriguing Dougray Scott as a character whimsically dubbed “Johnny Thunders.” Anyone else thinking of a rockstar here?
A Glimpse into Mythology
While the trailer keeps a lot under wraps, we know Refn is borrowing some serious inspiration from the tales of Orpheus and Eurydice. These star-crossed lovers had it all—until a snake decided it was time for a tragic plot twist by biting Eurydice, sending her to the underworld. In a desperate bid to save her, Orpheus braves the depths below, serenading Hades to win back his love—under the condition of not looking back until they’re out! Spoiler alert: he fails, and well, we know how that sad song goes.
Refn’s Unique Approach
While the trailer doesn’t serve up that epic imagery we’d expect from such a classic tale, Refn’s M.O. is anything but predictable. After making waves with the Pusher trilogy and the English language debut featuring Tom Hardy in Bronson, he delighted audiences with Drive way back in 2011. But post-Drive, it seems like he’s been delightfully oddball, with films like Only God Forgives which left many scratching their heads.
What’s Next?
In 2016, we saw him flirt with the horror genre in The Neon Demon before he turned his focus to television. Chatting with comic book maestro Ed Brubaker for the Amazon Prime series Too Old to Die Young and diving into the Danish drama Copenhagen Cowboy for Netflix left fans thirsty for his return to the big screen.
Counting Down to Release
So, as we anticipate Her Private Hell, it looks like Refn is still wading in the weird waters, promising a cinematic experience that’s guaranteed to be anything but boring. Get ready for a summer that’s downright mythical when this beauty hits the theaters on July 24, 2026. Mark your calendars!
