Now, all versions of Alien 3 pick up sometime after the nail-biting conclusion of Aliens. Spoiler alert: it’s not a friendly place! Here, Ripley forms a bond with the good doctor, Clemens, played by the dashing Charles Dance. She’s also kept somewhat in check by Dillon, a holy man portrayed by the formidable Charles S. Dutton. But of course, chaos erupts when a Xenomorph decides to crash the party, and suddenly Ripley’s their only shot at making it out alive.

From Hero to Heartbreak

Now, let’s be real; although Alien 3 raked in a bit more moolah than its predecessors, it left audiences feeling like they just stepped on a Lego brick. Many were mad that it kicked off with the deaths of fan-favorites Hicks and Newt—and did you see that fiery finale where Ripley leaps into a furnace instead of allowing the evil Weyland-Yutani Corporation to get its grubby hands on the Xenomorph Queen embryo? Ouch! This film might have dealt out some iconic imagery—like that unforgettable shot of a bald Ripley facing off with a Xenomorph—but the mood was darker than an underground rave.

A Rocky Road to Release

The journey of this film was anything but smooth, riddled with woes and shuffling producers. He wasn’t there to oversee all the bells and whistles like special effects and sound.

Dillon and the eccentric Golic, played by Paul McGann, come across as much more interesting than their theatrical counterparts. And let’s not forget Ripley’s tragic end that hits you right in the feels.
