Forbidden Fruits: A Hilarious Look at Reclaiming Original Sin
Welcome to the World of Forbidden Fruits
If you thought you were about to watch another run-of-the-mill teen movie, think again! The first few minutes of Forbidden Fruits might throw you off with its familiar mean girl vibe. We’re introduced to the Fruits—Apple, Cherry, and Fig—who glide through the mall food court like the royalty they think they are. But wait! Just when you think you know these girls, they throw a wild card into the mix—a newcomer named Pumpkin is introduced through a totally bizarre pagan ritual. Yep, this ain’t your average mall drama!
Taking Back the Narrative
Director Meredith Alloway has a fascinating perspective on female empowerment. “You know, women are often labeled as the origin of all sin and evil—how about we flip that script?” Alloway shares post-SXSW premiere. The film is based on a play by Lily Houghton, titled Of the woman came the beginning of sin, and through her we all die. The idea? These fabulous ladies are taking back their narrative in a snazzy, humorous way. “When women gather and set some sort of intent—be it crafting spells or just chatting at a sleepover—there’s some serious power there!”
Expect the Unexpected
At first glance, the Fruits don’t seem to be anything more than cookie-cutter characters. But don’t be fooled! Alloway and Houghton dive deep into their complexities while serving up plenty of laughs along the way. “It’s all about taking things seriously in a light-hearted way,” says Lili Reinhart, who plays our fetch queen, Apple. “For her, what they’re doing is life or death—incredibly silly, but intensely meaningful!”
Complex Characters, Real Issues
Victoria Pedretti, who brings Cherry to life, weighs in: “These characters break free from stereotypes. The audience will be pretty shocked to discover their humanity!” She highlights the struggle women face with societal expectations—wear too little, and you’re labeled a slut; wear too much, and boom—you’re a prude. Can’t a girl just wear what she wants? “We’re all just trying to navigate the crazy expectations thrown at us.”
Apple’s Journey Through Chaos
Reinhart emphasizes that the film also delves into mental health. “Apple is slowly losing her grip, and viewers will see her mask start to slip. By the third act, it’s a rollercoaster of emotions!”
Community and Connection
Cherry’s character adds layers to the plot. She’s lost her family and finds solace among the Fruits. Pedretti explains, “Being part of this sisterhood keeps Cherry grounded—it’s everything to her.” Meanwhile, Apple is devoting all her energy to helping others while neglecting her own big mess. Talk about relatable!
Pumpkin’s Arrival Shakes Things Up
And then we have Pumpkin (played by the delightful Lola Tung), who’s the new girl looking for a place to fit in. “She’s the one who knows everyone but remains a bit of a loner. Her journey is about wanting that special bond with these quirky witches,” Tung teases with a giggle.
Glitter, Witches, and the Power of Femininity
What’s not to love? With witches throwing glitter in malls and mean girls sporting surprising depths, Forbidden Fruits promises a delightful concoction that’s as entertaining as it is empowering.
