The Tragic Fate of Foggy Nelson

So, picture this: we kick off the first episode of Daredevil: Born Again and right out of the gate, the supervillain Bullseye takes our buddy Foggy Nelson down! Bam! He gets shot, and we see him hit the ground like a sack of potatoes. We even get the dramatic sound effects confirming his heart has stopped. Yep, it’s a real tear-jerker, complete with a funeral.

The Hope for Foggy’s Resurrection

Now, here’s the kicker. Charlie Cox, who plays our titular hero, keeps telling us that Foggy is as dead as disco. But fans? Oh, they are hanging onto the hope that Elden Henson will bounce back in season 2 like a rubber ball! And why not? After all, he’s a comic book character, and if there’s one thing comics excel at, it’s resurrecting folks — usually after a dramatic death involving a supervillain or two.

Welcome to the World of Foggy Nelson

Let’s rewind a bit. Foggy Nelson burst onto the scene in Daredevil #1 back in 1964, created by the legendary Stan Lee and Bill Everett. He was that classic comic sidekick, kind of like Jimmy Olsen for Superman or Etta Candy for Wonder Woman. You know the type — a lovable doofus, fretting about his friends, and not exactly winning any medals for bravery.

In Daredevil #6, we see our dear Foggy trying to play hero by investigating some villains. Spoiler alert: it doesn’t go well. He ends up in a coma faster than you can say “supervillain.” Thankfully, it’s Daredevil to the rescue, reminding us who wears the superhero cape around here.

From Sidekick to Super Sidekick

But Foggy doesn’t stay one-dimensional for long. Over the years, he gets a serious character upgrade, especially during the brilliant runs by Brian Michael Bendis and Ed Brubaker in the 2000s. He evolves into the deeper character we know and love today, making it all the more heartbreaking when he kicks the bucket at the end of Daredevil #82 in 2006. Talk about a plot twist! Our friend gets shanked while trying to support Matt in prison. It’s a bad day for Foggy, but it turns out he was just playing hide and seek in witness protection. Surprise!

Foggy’s Wild Ride Continues

Fast forward through the comic chaos, and we find Foggy facing even more challenges. In 2013’s Daredevil #22, when Matt swings by with a pizza to patch things up, our hero has a devastating bombshell: he has cancer. Woah, talk about a curveball! While battling cancer sounds heroic, it’s made worse when a new villain, Leap Frog (yes, you read that right), comes hopping into their lives, leading to yet another near-death experience for Foggy.

But fear not! Thanks to some comic book shenanigans and Ant-Man’s Pym particles, Foggy’s “death” turns out to be a clever ruse. It’s all part of a scheme to keep him safe while battling that pesky cancer.

Facing Death and the Hand Ninjas

Then, chaos strikes again in the epic Red Fist Saga when ninjas invade New York. Just your typical Tuesday for Foggy and Matt. As Daredevil defeats the hand ninjas, Foggy meets a rather unfortunate fate — crumbling into dust. Yikes! Turns out he had become a secret agent for the ninjas, but his well-timed resurrection meant that it was game over for him — until Matt does something totally insane by diving into Hell to face off against a demon!

Hope Reigns Eternal

In a heart-wrenching twist, Matt rescues Foggy from the clutches of Hell but ends up in a bit of a pickle himself. When he emerges, he’s back as a priest, completely forgetting his past. It’s like a soap opera, only with more tights and less bad acting.

The Bottom Line: Will Foggy Return?

As this rollercoaster of events shows, it’s no wonder fans are convinced that there’s still some life left in the character of Foggy Nelson for Daredevil: Born Again. He’s died, resurrected, and gone through more drama than a daytime soap star! Plus, considering that showrunners are pulling storylines from the comics, we might just get to see our favorite sidekick back in action. Will he rise like a phoenix? Who knows! But hope springs eternal, even when you’re tangled up with the Devil himself.

Daredevil: Born Again season 2 drops new episodes every Tuesday on Disney+. Don’t miss it!
