14 Movies Where They Could Have Just Called the Police
When Common Sense Goes Out the Window
Movies are often all about the drama, right? But sometimes, you have to wonder if these characters even heard of the good old 911. Instead of dialing up law enforcement for a quick rescue, they’re running around doing their own detective work or getting themselves into all sorts of mischief. If only these folks had thought about tapping their phones instead of tapping into their own heroic instincts, we’d have a lot fewer films ending in chaos!
Home Alone
Let’s start with Kevin, the kid who turned his house into a fort complete with traps for wannabe burglars. Homeboy had every chance to call the cops when he saw the baddies coming, yet opted for DIY security instead. A simple “Hello, police? There are some robbers in my house” could have wrapped things up before the pizza delivery guy even got there!
Phone Booth
Next up: Stu Shepard. This guy gets himself stuck in a phone booth, held hostage by a sniper who’s just itching to pull the trigger. It gets thrilling, but honestly, couldn’t he just have phoned the police instead of playing a game of cat and mouse with a crazed gunman? Just a thought!
Rear Window
Then we have L.B. Jefferies, who winds up taking snooping to the next level because he thinks his neighbor’s a murderer. Instead of dialing up the cops first, he sets out on a wild sleuthing mission. Spoiler: he could’ve saved a few lives — including his own — if he just straight-up reported his hunch instead.
Disturbia
In the tale of Kale, he thinks his neighbor is up to no good — a serial killer, no less! So what does he do? He starts snooping around. Totally ignoring the possibility of just getting some backup from the police means he jumps into danger more than once. Dude, just call the cops!
The Burbs
The neighbors get a bit too jumpy about the new folks next door, convinced they’re hiding something sinister. Instead of ringing the police, they go trespassing and break into homes! Someone should’ve just told them that sometimes it’s better to let the professionals handle it — yikes!
The Gift (2015)
Our next movie features Simon and Robyn, who receive creepy gifts from a guy named Gordo. As things escalate, it sure would’ve been handy if they’d documented this weirdness and reported it sooner. Nothing like a “Hey, police, we’re being stalked!” to clear things up!
Cape Fear (1991)
Sam Bowden is another character who finds himself personally harassed by the relentless Max Cady after prison. Instead of leaning heavily on the cops, he often confronts Cady himself like he’s auditioning for an action film. Spoiler: that’s not how the law works!
The Hand That Rocks the Cradle
Claire discovers her seemingly perfect nanny is a little too good to be true. Instead of involving the authorities when things get suspicious, she just tries to handle everything herself. Someone get her an emergency planner, stat!
One Hour Photo
Sy Parrish has a weird obsession with the Yorkin family, and before it turns into full-on horror, someone could’ve called the cops about this creep! A report to the police about his sketchy behavior could have spared them all a wild ride of terror.
The Cable Guy
Chip Douglas gets a little too attached to his clients. Instead of tackling his issues or reaching out for help, Steven tries to deal with Chip personally. Probably not his best move when the guy is creeping him out on an epic scale!
Fatal Attraction
Dan and Alex’s affair takes a dark turn when Alex won’t take no for an answer. Instead of jumping straight to legal action when things get crazy, they just react to the drama unfolding. But hey, maybe next time keep a lawyer on speed dial, good idea?
Sleeping with the Enemy
Laura fakes her death to escape from her abusive husband. Kudos for being brave! But man, if she had relied on legal protections sooner, she wouldn’t have had to live on the edge for so long. Next time a little police intervention might do wonders!
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
Mikael and Lisbeth stumble upon horrific crimes, but instead of letting the police get involved early on, they make some risky moves on their own. Just because they’re on the case doesn’t mean they have to go it alone — cops are there for a reason!
The Menu
Finally, when the dinner guests figure out Chef Slowik’s plans, calling for help is the last thing on their minds. Let’s be real, if that dinner invitation felt off, someone should’ve given the police a heads-up way before the first course!
