cress: This is definitely 'Die Hard in the White House', but it's lack of originality doesn't take away from the fact that this is a pretty good action flick with a good performance by Gerard Butler.
It mimics Die Hard in a lot of ways, which probably why it worked for me. Hell, the scene where Dylan McDermott runs into Butler in the White House is almost identical to when Alan Rickman goes up to the roof and bumps into John McClane, cigarette being lit up and all. The first hour is very solid, and the storming of the White House is very well done.
Butler actually isn't bad in this, once you get past his so-so American accent. Robert Forrester needs to retire--he looks ancient and that phantom ghost hair he has on top of his head isn't doing him any favors. I'm glad they killed Ashely Judd off quickly in the beginning, because she is a terrible actress. Aaron Eckhart is there, saying "They won't get my code" every 15 minutes. The comic relief is provided by Madam Secretary, who gets the shit beat out of her. She reminded me of an old, belligerent Holly Hunter. She's kicking and screaming, arms and legs flailing, dress above her waist, being dragged around. Man, they did not like her.
It's a decent popcorn flick that has some effective action scenes, even if it's cheesy and unoriginal at times. As Die Hard clones go, this is one of the better ones. And it's a helluva lot better than the last DIE HARD flick. Eat a dick, Bruce Willis.
