cress: This film is nothing new for the horror genre. We've seen it a lot--a supernatural entity haunts a family, but all it really needs is closure over it's loss. MAMA is effective, though, because the director makes it visually appealing.
The chills are used effectively, even though the director does use the "let's make it silent then scare the shit out of them with a loud noise" gimmick, which I fucking hate. What I think elevates this film is the flashback/dream sequences and the CGI work for the entity of Mama. It's reminiscent of Gore Verbenski's THE RING in that regard.
If you liked THE RING or DARK WATER, which I think this film is similar to, then you should give it a try.
