"The Dark Knight" is a Failure in Japan

"The Dark Knight" is a Failure in JapanSubmit Comment
FilmJunk noticed something interesting about how "The Dark Knight" is doing in the international markets. According to the site, Japan is not to excited about the film, which is the second highest earner of all time in the US and currently the #3 ranked movie on IMDB.

In it's third week in Japanese theaters, "Knight" has earned only $8.7 million, which is $6 million less than what it earned in the smaller Korean market. Even "Batman Begins" had a $14 million opening in Japan. So why are the Japanese so uninterested in a movie that the entire world has embraced? Critic Chika Minagawa offers a possible explanation:

"The story is very pessimistic. It has a dark and gloomy texture that Japanese movie fans do not find appealing in a 'comic hero' film... Japanese movie fans expect such films to be fun and action packed, for the hero to be attractive, for the villain to be loud and outrageous, and for the movie itself to be easy to understand and light."

Currently, the number one movie in Japan is Hayao Miyazaki's animated blockbuster "Ponyo on the Cliff," which has already brought in a staggering $93.2 million in its first four weeks.

So, in other words, Japanese people are retarded. Well, what else can you expect from the country that brought us Pokemon?

It would have worked better if Batman were a seventeen year old hermaphrodite with blue hair, and the Joker were a real clown who's mission in life was to bring fecal fetish porn to the masses.

Japan enjoys some of the most disturbing films and shows on the planet. They single-handedly turned the medium of cartoon into both pornography and extreme violence. Certainly they are jesting. All this from a country that sells vending machine panties. Agreed, though even their darkest animes like Neon Genesis and Blue Gender offer some hope, must both of those series killed off mankind and had bittersweet endings. Both were popular, and both were EXTREMELY violent and disturbing. Dark Knight wasn't action-packed? Right, and all of the fifty Jap Godzilla films played like a Bay flick? Mothra versus Rodan is like Bad Boys 3 or something? Bale isn't attractive? LOL. Well, he makes most Jap men look fugly by comparison. I think far more Japanese films have appeared on MST3K. And the Japanese want easy to understand films? LOL. DK was pretty simple, even cliched at points. The guys that brought us the insanity of Big O and NGE now think a popcorn flick is 'too intelligent'? Chika is on Japacrack.
