There is something for everyone this weekend, just nothing spectacular. The first film that has been drawing much attention is "Jackass: Number 2," the sequel to the 2002 film about a group of guys participating in numerous exercises in gross-out behavior. The sequel takes everything to a new level, and is once again rated R, which means the true fans will not be able to see it.
Sean Penn's portrayal of the populist Southerner Willie Stark in "All the King's Men" is also released. The film features some of today's best acting talents, such as Sean Penn, Jude Law, Anthony Hopkins, Kate Winslet, Mark Ruffalo, and James Gandolfini.
The other two wide releases are Jet Li's "Fearless" and the WWI drama "Flyboys." "Fearless" is a story of the most famous fighter in all of China at the turn of the 20th century, who fought his way out of darkness and into history. "Flyboys" is a film starring James Franco, about a group of American's who came to France to help the country defend itself against a German invasion. Based on a true story, the men joined a division of the French Air Service, where they would head to the skies in rickety planes to fend off the enemy.
There is also a variety of films that are available in selected theaters. First is Michel Gondry's (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind) film that explores his favorite topic, sleep and dreaming. The film is entitled "The Science of Sleep" and stars Gael García Bernal (The King), who manipulates his dreams and becomes trapped in the fantasy world.
Also in limited release is "Renaissance," starring Daniel Craig (Casino Royale). The film is about a futuristic Paris, where a large corporation has insinuates itself into every aspect of contemporary life to sell its primary export, eternal youth and beauty.
The other films in limited release are "Bandidas," starring Salma Hayek and Penélope Cruz, "American Hardcore," a documentary of the American punk rock scene between 1980-1986, and "Feast," the movie that almost did not make it to the big screen, but after much begging, The Weinstein Company has finally released this treat for any horror fan.
Overall, this seems like a promising weekend, where anyone can find something to watch at the theaters.
