"Gridiron Gang" Beats the CompetitionSubmit Comment
Yet another weak box office, resulted in yet another underdog movie winner. "Gridiron Gang" took first place this weekend with $15 million, earning back half of the money spent on the film, which was $30 million. The Rock stars as Sean Porter, who starts a football program at a juvenile correctional facility. The hardened teenagers had to learn to play together and went on to become the CIF league champions.

Brian De Palma's suspense/drama "The Black Dahlia" took second place with a only $10.36 million. While actually earning almost $400 more per-theater than "Gridiron Gang", the film opened to 1,300 less theaters. The film's relatively hefty budget of $50 million will cause a problem for Universal Pictures, as the film is off to a mediocre start.

Rounding off the top 5, were Christopher Reeve's animated feature "Everyone's Hero", earning $6.15 million. Zach Braff's story of a man turning 30 and rethinking his future, "The Last Kiss", earned $4.70 million. Last weekend's first place film "The Covenant" dropped off to take fifth place and took in half of last weekend's amount, earning $4.7 million.

Allen Coulter's, "Hollywoodland" has dropped off all the way to ninth place, from its last weekend's second place spot, earning only $2.74 million. Once again "The Illusionist" and "Little Miss Sunshine" remain in the top 10, since expanding the release. "The Illusionist" took seventh place, earning $3.75 million, bringing the total to $23.35 million on a $16.5 million budget. "Little Miss Sunshine" took eighth place, earning $3.35 million, bringin the film's total to $46.39 million. All that on a $8 million budget. Both films opened in only 1,400 theaters, which is 2,000 less than "Gridiron Gang."

Finally, Artie Lange's "Beer League" attempted to reach the $1 million mark, and fell short, earning only a third ($320,000) in its limited opening weekend.
