"The Covenant" Takes First

"The Covenant" Takes FirstSubmit Comment
This weekend resulted in very weak box office numbers, where no movie surpased $10 million.

The horror thriller "The Covenant" took first with only $9 million, surprisingly overtaking "Hollywoodland," which earned only $6 million. "Hollywoodland" earned about $500 more per theater than "The Covenant", but its smaller release resulted in it taking second place. Ben Affleck, who portrays "Superman" TV star George Reeves in the film, actually won the award for Best Actor at the Venice International Film Festival on Saturday.

As predicted, Walt Disney Pictures' "Invincible" still made the top 5, by taking third place with $5.8 million, pushing the total to $45.65 million overall.

The other new release, "The Protector", starring the martial arts expert Tony Jaa, took fourth with $5 million. Rounding out the top 5 was the high action thriller "Crank", starring Jason Statham, earning $4.8 million, for a total of $19.86 million. Pretty good for a $12 million budget.

"The Illusionist" dropping one spot from last week, while adding about 400 theaters, taking the total to $18.01 million on a $16.5 million budget. The other limited release film that has been gaining traction is "Little Miss Sunshine", which dropped 3 spots from last week earning $4.43 million, bringing the total to $41.65 million. All that on a $8 million budget.

Nicolas Cage's "The Wicker Man" dropped off from third place to eighth, bringing in $4.12 million and earning a total of $17.49 million for the last two weeks. The total amount earned is almost exactly half of the film's budget, which is $35 million.

The last two films that came in ninth and tenth, were "Talladega Nights" and "Barnyard". Both films have earned more money than they spent on making the film. "Talladega Nights" is now up to $142.18 million on a budget of $72.50 million. And if it wasn't for getting rights from Nascar, the budget would have been even smaller. Nickelodeon's "Barnyard" is now up to $66.86 million on a budget of $51 million.
