"Crank" Couldn't Keep it Up.

"Crank" CouldnSubmit Comment
Lions Gate Films' action-packed thriller "Crank" started out on Friday with $3.2 million at the box office, but quickly dropped off through out the rest of the weekend, ending up in second place. The Disney football drama "Invincible", starring Mark Wahlberg and Greg Kinnear, took first place during this weekend with $12.10 million, dropping by $5 million from their opening weekend last week.

Jason Statham's film "Crank" ended up with $10.30 million, only 50 dollars less than "Invincible" per theater. Warner Bros. remake of the '70 thriller "The Wicker Man" brought in $9.57 million, taking third place. Nicolas Cage stars as a sheriff who investigates the disappearance of a young girl on a remote island . His hopes of unraveling the girl's disappearance become increasingly uncertain when he discovers evidence of pagan rituals.

Rouding out the top 5, were another Greg Kinnear comedy/drama "Little Miss Sunshine" and Edward Norton's "The Illusionist." Both films are independently financed and have consistently remained stable at the box office after their very limited opening weekend releases. "Sunshine" brought in $7.58 million, while "The Illusionist" brought in $6.35 million and has generated over $6.5 thousand per theater.

"Talladega Nights" took sixth place with $6.10 million, now generating a total over $136 million on a $72.5 million budget. Nickelodeon's "Barnyard" actually jumped up 3 places by taking seventh with $8.32 million. The boost was probably brought on by the lack of children movies this weekend.

Some other interesting films were "Pirates of the Caribbean" taking 12th place, "Beerfest" dropping from 4th to 13th place, and "Crossover" not making the top 10 it's opening weekend, coming in 11th place. And oh yeah, what happened to "Snakes on a Plane"? New Line Cinema did not even report estimates for this weekend at all.

Finally, "This Film is Not Yet Rated", opened in only two theaters in New York City and made as estimated $30 thousand.

The numbers are a bit different for the 4 day Labor Day Weekend. "Invincible" ($15.21M), "Crank" ($13.00M), "The Wicker Man" ($11.72M), "Little Miss Sunshine" ($9.73), "The Illusionist" ($8.02M).
