Ben Stein's "Expelled" vs Bill Maher's "Religulous"

Variety now reports that Ben Stein's documentary "Expelled," which aims to dislodge Darwin and evolution as the primary doctrines taught in public-schools, will be released two months before Bill Maher's pro-agnostic documentary "Religulous."

Stein's career is very impressive, ranging from writer, public speaker to game show host, and now you can add documentary maker to the list. While Stein is not a scientist, he believes that all the gaps that have been left in Darwin's theories can be plugged by religion. And while, this will spark much controversy, the main issue seems to be about freedom of speech. Stein asks, why is one theory considered to be correct, while another cannot be spoken about in public?

I have many of my own opinions as to why religion should be kept out of public schools and out of the science world, and according to the New York Times, many scientists interviewed have the same opinions, but were fooled into appearing in the documentary.

The magazine reports that preeminent evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins was among many of the film's talking heads who say they were told that they were appearing in a documentary called "Crossroads" about the intersection of science and religion. Also, some who've seen the film at early screenings are troubled by its linkage of Darwin's theories to the Nazis' extermination efforts.

Whatever your opinion on the topic is, freedom of speech should not be violated, but at the same time, going around and spewing nonsense should not be necessarily tolerated. Whether Stein's film proposes a real theory or simply stirs up controversy is yet to be seen.

i disagree. spewing out nonsence is the downside of freedom of speech. it SHould be tolerated, just not taken seriously. As for the nazi thing, as scary as it is, Hitler thought that his blue-eyed blonde haired german race was the highest evolved human life form and claimed that africans and jews had not evolved as much and were still in a subhuman animal state. he was worried that interbreeding would pollute his "Master Race." and we all know what happened next. This logic based on evolution is now the ground work for the KKK. however, any belief can be twisted into something bad, not just evolution. Look at christianity. Jesus says love your enemies and turn the other cheek and don't return evil for evil and then the Crusades happen!

Stein talks about Freedom of Speech, but if he were to go to a church and talk about his theories, everyone would listen to him. If he were to start talking about Evolution in church, nobody would listen. It all depends on your audience. I thought it was obvious that scientists do not want to hear religious theories? In my opinion they shouldn't, things need an explanation besides a gut feeling.

I saw an early screening of Expelled, and frankly, I was underwhelmed. The movie clearly takes quotes from people like Dawkins and P.Z. Myers out of context, and displays several misunderstandings not only about evolution, but about science itself. Due to its cartoon version of evolutionary theory, its remarkable lack of evidence for its case, its unbalanced and hysterical portrayal of the "martyrs" of creationism, its dismal and depressing musical score, and its lack of genuine humor will only succeed in preaching to the choir. Skip it.

<< Jesus says love your enemies and turn the other cheek and don't return evil for evil and then the Crusades happen! >> Again we make the mistake of blaming Jesus for the things that PEOPLE do in His Name. Just because people capitalizes on using His Name for their own lust for power doesn't mean the man himself is bad. But that's what the world does, blame the man because of the sins of others. This is a Godless world, a Christless world and it will only prove in the end that it cannot make it on its own because man will not do what Jesus and other great wise men and prophets said to do - which is contrary to what people have done in the Name of God. And besides, what's wrong with believing in a stupid fantasy if it generates qualities in one's life that those without it don't posssess? Live and let live. One point of interest in this film is how much anger the Darwinists have toward Godly thought.
