Sony's "Resident Evil: Extinction" easily took the weekend crown with an estimated opening gross of $24 million from 2,828 theaters. The original film, took $17.7 million in its opening weekend, back in 2002, while the sequel had a $23 million opening in 2004.
Among wide players, Lionsgate's Dane Cook-Jessica Alba starrer "Good Luck Chuck" opened at No. 2 after "Resident," grossing an estimated $14 million from 2,612 locations. Amanda Bynes comedy "Sydney White," the weekend's other new wide entry, grossed an estimated $5.3 million from 2,104 theaters, putting it at No. 6.
Paramount Vantage's "Into the Wild" led the specialty race with an impressive per screen average of $51,649, but was shown at only 4 theaters.
Warner Bros.' Brad Pitt starrer "The Assassination of Jesse James" grossed an estimated $144,000 in its debut from five runs in Gotham, L.A. and Toronto for a solid per screen average of $28,717. The film has some catching up to play, in order to make back its $30 million budget.
