Audrey Tautou (Da Vinci Code) has signed up to play legendary French fashion designer Coco Chanel in a new biopic. Director Anne Fontaine has cast Tautou in the movie, which tells the story of Chanel's early life.
Fontaine says, "I wanted to follow the interior path of this young woman who was poor, without education, but who had an uncommon personality that was ahead of her time." Chanel died in 1971 at the age of 88.
At the same time, Mads Mikkelsen (Casino Royale) is set to play Russian composer Igor Stravinsky in another film about Coco Chanel, entitled "Coco & Igor." Director William Friedkin (Bug) made the announcement at the Cannes Film Festival and has cast Marina Hands to embody the legendary fashion designer.
"Coco & Igor" is adapted from the novel written by Chris Greenhalgh. Shooting will take place in Paris this September for a spring 2008 release.
