"Pitch Perfect 2" Dominates at Box Office, Easily Beats "Mad Max: Fury Road"Submit Comment
Everyone thought that the weekend would go to the $150 million "Mad Max: Fury Road," but "Pitch Perfect" sequel surprised insiders by grossing a whopping $70 million at the domestic box office, beating "Fury Road" for the top spot.

"Pitch Perfect 2" cost only $29 million. When international numbers are included, the new movie opened to $108.4 million, which is more than three times its budget and just shy of the $115 million earned in total by the original movie. The sequel has a 69% fresh rating on RottenTomatoes.

"Mad Max: Fury Road" had to settle for second place with $44.4 million. With international numbers, the movie opened to an impressive $109.4 million. It will easily become profitable and has a stellar 98% fresh rating.

Meanwhile, "Avengers: Age of Ultron" landed in third place with an additional $38.9 million to bring its worldwide total to $1.14 billion. It's on its way to $1.5 billion earned by the original "Avengers."

"Furious 7" is still performing well, but ended up in 6th place with $3.6 million. The film now has a worldwide total of $1.49 and has a great chance of surpassing "The Avengers" for the third highest-earning movie of all time.

Well we kind of figured that.

I'd expect that since Mad Max while visually appealing isn't exactly the kind of movie that gets the teens into theaters.

Kind of sad, but that's why movies suck these days.

Mad Max was excellent! Just a damn good moview all around. Anyone who liked pitch perfect enough to see the sequel is a whiny p*ssy. Tom Hardy was great.

Mad Max was rated R so I'm happy it did what it did.

Can't wait to see "Fury Road", but it did good being a reboot/sequel/whatever of a 30 year old franchise with an R rating. Pitch Perfect barely needed one film...can't believe audiences felt it deserved another. Who knows, maybe it was enjoyable and Elizabeth Banks finally got to stretch her creative muscles as a director.
