"SpongeBob Movie" Dominates at Box Office, "Jupiter Ascending" FlopsSubmit Comment
The original "SpongeBob SquarePants Movie" hit theaters in 2004, opening to $32 million domestically and going on to earn $140 million worldwide on a budget of $30 million.

The sequel, called "The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water," was just released. It cost $74 million to make, but just opened to $56 million domestically, ahead of industry projections. The opening numbers placed the film in first place at the box office.

The new movie earned an additional $26.8 million internationally for a worldwide debut of $82.8 million. It has a 75% fresh rating on RottenTomatoes.

The $178 million sci-fi film "Jupiter Ascending," which is directed by the Wachowskis (The Matrix) and stars Channing Tatum and Mila Kunis, had to settle for third place with $19 million. That's another big flop of 2015. The movie earned another $32.5 million overseas, but that's still far from what's needed to break even. "Jupiter Ascending" has a 22% fresh rating.

"The Seventh Son," starring Jeff Bridges and Julianne Moore, flopped as well. It landed in fourth place with just $7.1 million, despite costing $95 million to make. Overseas was a different story. "The Seventh Son" earned $83.6 million internationally for a worldwide total of $90.7 million. It has a 10% fresh rating.

*now.

Oh the joyous irony of a live-action cartoon being beat up at the box office by a kid's actual cartoon.

Eat a d*ck, Lana, preferably your own since it's now in a pickle jar.

too much cgi is good enough to kill whatever dignity a good story has, I think we've had enough visual stimulation Hollywood, I really haven't seen any improvement over the years except cgi is now in HD...can we get back to original thinking, story telling, and filming please? and stop introducing more teeny bopper actors...or else learn the hard way and watch people eventually get even more bored and watch sales flop even worse than they do now

@BadChadB33

Don't be ridiculous. Even her being naked for 90 seconds would've made this movie worth my money

Both Jupiter Ascending and Seventh Son absolutely reeked of bomb!
Variety tried to say the audiences are hurting any attempt at originality in new movies, but what was original about these two terrible mall movies??

The theater I patronize didn't take either of those two and went with Spongebob instead...and boy are they happy they did that!
