Movie Theater Attendance Hits 20 Year Low

Movie Theater Attendance Hits 20 Year LowSubmit Comment
Now that 2014 has come to an end and all the statistics and box office results are coming in, it has become clear that last year saw another increase in ticket prices and the lowest movie theater attendance in two decades.

According to estimates, about 1.26 billion people purchased movie tickets in 2014 in North America, which is the lowest result since 1995, when 1.21 billion people went to watch films in theaters.

In 2013, attendance was at 1.34 billion, which is still lower than the all-time high of 1.57 billion, which happened in 2002, thanks in part to "Spider-Man," "The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers," "Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones," "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets" and "My Big Fat Greek Wedding."

Average ticket prices are up to $8.15, compared to $8.13 in 2013. But even though ticket prices are on the rise, overall revenue ($10.36 billion) at the North American box office is down by 5% from 2013.

The problem is simple... lots of big-budget films underperformed, with only "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1" and "Guardians of the Galaxy" crossing the $300 million mark domestically. In 2013, four films crossed the mark.

The good news is that 2015 will offer highly-anticipated films like "Avengers: Age of Ultron," "Mad Max: Fury Road," "Jurassic World," "Inside Out," "Ted 2," "Terminator Genisys," "Minions," "Ant-Man," "The Fantastic Four," and "Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens." And 2016 should be even bigger.

Thank god for piracy.

I would blame sh*tty, repetitive, and highly derivative films, high ticket prices and the competitive cost of home theater solutions, plus the advent of VOD.

Make good theatrical movies, price tickets competitively and give audiences a reason to leave the house and things might change.

Some countries are far more expensive than that.
In some places it costs almost $20 to goto a film not counting the price for treats drinks etc.

"The good news is that 2015 will offer highly-anticipated films like "Avengers: Age of Ultron,""

Summer box office winner, easily.

"Mad Max: Fury Road,"

FAIL. No one asked for this trash and very few actually want it.

"Jurassic World,"

Moderate win. Doesn't look all that great and isn't generating much buzz.

"Inside Out,"

FAIL.I don't even know what the f*ck it is.

"Ted 2,"

Moderate win. First one was a one-off. Remains to be seen if concept is enough to bring many people back for a sequel.

"Terminator Genisys,"

lol, fail f*cking fail. Biggest joke of the year and a epic, grand failure.

"Minions,"

Moderate win, maybe a bit more. Franchise has many fans and lots of demand.

"Ant-Man,"

Moderate win on the scale of GotG.

"The Fantastic Four,"

Fail, I hope.

"and "Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens.""

Yeah, big win of the year, probably, and a huge carry over into next year.

"And 2016 should be even bigger."

Bigger than two Marvel movies and an all new Star Wars?

Magic Eight Ball says "doubtful".

The good news for 2015 is already in Mink.Bullit has f*cking quit.

Now that is special.
Minkοwski writes:

Besides, what can one expect when fresh films like Edge of Tomorrow relatively fail but entirely forgettable films like Guardians of the Galaxy (and that Iron Man 3 garbage) make at least twice as much?

Hollywood can blame only themselves. People want to be entertained. But they don't want to be bled dry just to see the same old sh*t, only to have fresh films poorly marketed.

That and endless greed have spread their talents and services pretty thin.

Oh, I'm sure "Bullitt"/"Papillion" will be back.

No doubt about that.

Can't have hyperbolic theatrics without the stock and trade drama queen.

It's right out of standard Internet casting.

He forgot to mention fast and furious 7. That movie will gross more than ted2, minions, ant man, inside out, fantastic four, and mad max.(not combined). Way to not mention it.

You know it's come down to everything is just a placeholder of some niche in film. Mink explained a lot of the technical stuff but basically theaters have lost their magic. Used to be a treat to go see a film, now they are pumped out like vending machine candy. Every film a manufactured copy of whatever else was on the line previous. No really adventure or daring was is put into anymore. Kind of why I defend Gravity and films like that. Yeah it's a basic story, but it was it's own story and a unique visual experience. Just a thought anyway.
