"The Interview" Has Been Purchased and Rented Over 2 Million Times

"The Interview" Has Been Purchased and Rented Over 2 Million TimesSubmit Comment
Sony Pictures spent $44 million to make "The Interview." But because all major theater chains refused to show due to a terrorist threat, it became clear that the studio was going to have a difficult time earning back the budget and all the marketing costs.

It now turns out that "The Interview" grossed $2.8 million from 331 independent theaters over the four-day weekend. But online, the movie was rented and purchased over 2 million times, which resulted in an additional $15 million, becoming the studio's biggest online film of all time.

While the numbers are decent, it seems that Sony will end up taking a big loss, especially since the movie has an unimpressive 52% fresh rating.

Nah. Not really. Here's the deal. The movie's on the internet. So as the old saying goes, the f*cking cat is out of the f*cking bag. The whole idea of the so-called terrorist threat, which was without any credibility to begin with, was to suppress the movie entirely. That's impossible now, thanks in large part to torrents.

So do a wide release in theaters already. Not like the hackers, who had no means or intent to commit a terrorist attack before, will have much reason to even think of doing so now that the damned thing is all over the world.

P.S. I hear The Interview is a bigger hit in China than anywhere in the West. Says a lot.
