"Exodus: Gods and Kings" Underperforms at Box OfficeSubmit Comment
Ridley Scott's "Exodus: Gods and Kings," starring Christian Bale, took first place at the domestic box office this weekend, knocking "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1" from the top spot after three weeks.

"Exodus" earned $24.5 million domestically, which is lower than 20th Century Fox hoped for considering that the film cost $140 million to make. The movie's worldwide debut was $43.3 million and has a lousy 28% fresh rating on RottenTomatoes.

The other wide release of the weekend was Chris Rock's "Top Five" comedy. It earned $7.2 million from just 979 locations, which was good enough for fourth place. The movie will expand to 2,000 locations on January 1st. It has an 89% fresh rating.

On the specialty side, Paul Thomas Anderson's "Inherent Vice," starring Joaquin Phoenix, earned $330,000 in its debut from 5 locations. That's an impressive $66,000 per location average.

Meanwhile, "The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies," has hit international theaters, grossing $117.6 million from 37 foreign markets. That's higher than the result of the previous two films. This last installment will be released in the US on December 17th.

No surprise. The other historical pics of Scott, sans Gladiator, weren't big winners, either.

Kingdom of Heaven? Bomb. Robin Hood? Bomb.

Yeah, they made some money, but for films pushed out by the guy who made Gladiator, you'd think the dude would know by now what people want to see in "historical" flicks, not that there's any actual history in Scott's latest turd-o-rama, even if it did hit during the "Holiday Season" amongst more than few a Christians.

I'll give him this, though: it was quite interesting watching the Biblical ten plagues play out in IMAX.
