Ridley Scott Explains Why He Won't Direct a Comic Book Film

Posted: December 7th, 2014 by WorstPreviews.com Staff
Ridley Scott Explains Why He WonSubmit Comment
While promoting "Exodus: Gods and Kings," director Ridley Scott was asked whether there are any comic books he would be interesting in adapting for the big screen. The helmer responded that comic book movies are not for him.

"I've had a lot of opportunities and I tend not to do that. They're the hardest single thing to write," he said. "Taking a comic strip character is very hard to write, because comics are meant to work in one page, to work in frames with minimalistic dialogue. And a lot of it is left to the imagination of the reader. To do that in film you've got to be a little more explanatory. And that requires a good screenplay and good dialogue."

Meanwhile, Scott is adapting "The Martian" novel, starring Matt Damon, and is prepping the sequel to "Prometheus."

He won't make a comic book movie because even they have to make more sense than Prometheus.

Methinks dude needs to learn the difference between a a comic book and a comic STRIP.

There is, in fact, quite a bit of difference between Garfield and Wolverine....

Whatever. You just take the characters and the stories and write them like you would any other live-action movie. How hard is that?

So, basically he's afraid that if he decided to direct, the comicbook movie will flop. well, at least he's being honest.

dude should retire.his recent movies don't make much sense.

f*ck you, Scott!

Ridley Scott is either lying his ass off or just f*cking with the person that asked this question.

Scott has never, ever written a single screenplay for ANY of his films. He has only directed screenplays adapted from a novel or original screenplays written by others.

His response is also bizarre because he speaks as if no comic book films have ever been made and if he made one it would be the first one ever but since he's pretending he's a writer it would be too difficult to adapt from that medium.

I guess this smug c*nt has never seen great comic book films such as Superman, Batman, The Dark Knight, Iron Man, Constantine, and so on.

No Ridley, those movies don't exist, and you really have a lot of nerve to be that f*cking smug when the last halfway-decent film of yours was American Gangster nearly a decade ago!

f*ck off.

Huh...this guy might get along with Alan Moore pretty well. LOL

Not saying he is not wrong in a lot of respects, it is tough to convey all the stuff in comic books if you respect the detail there, but he is definitely undervaluing the challenge. He hasn't put his heart into a film in a long time. Prometheus could have been exceptional but he tried to make this big philosophical film! The whole origin of man was good I suppose and all, but the "Going to find them because they want us to" didn't make sense as Deaft says. Although that could have been for different reasons. They could have asked for us to come before they had developed some hate for us. Like they left directions and never erased them from the walls of temples and stuff because they just never came back. I'm curious if the "Prometheus" sequel will remedy a lot of these questions. We'll see.

I stopped taking exodus and Gods seriously when I saw it was pg13.its gonna be another Kingdom of heaven
Deaft0ne writes:
on December 7th, 2014 at 7:25:22 PM

@bando

Well Kingdom of Heaven was a solid film from Scott and was rated R. The best version is his extended cut and that version is one of the best films he's ever made.

Exodus otoh **is** PG-13 and most reviews say it's just a mess of a film with very little in the film that makes it compelling or engaging at all.

The Martian with Matt Damon might be interesting because the novel is a twist on the whole "guy marooned on Mars" story so we will see.
