"Penguins of Madagascar" and "Horrible Bosses 2" Both Flop at Box OfficeSubmit Comment
"The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1" easily won at the domestic box office for the second week in a row, adding another $57 million for a worldwide total of $480 million. The film cost $125 million to make and has a 66% fresh rating on RottenTomatoes.

Meanwhile, "Penguins of Madagascar," which is a spin-off of the popular "Madagascar" franchise, landed in second place with $25.8 million. Since the movie opened two days earlier, it has a domestic total of $36 million, one of the lowest results for an animated film opening over Thanksgiving.

That's also at least half of the opening numbers of the "Madagascar" movies. "Penguins of Madagascar" cost $132 million to make and has a 69% fresh rating.

The other wide release of the weekend was "Horrible Bosses 2," which landed in fifth place with $15.7 million over the weekend, far behind the $28.2 million that the first film earned during its opening weekend.

Heading into the weekend "Horrible Bosses 2" was expected to gross $35 million or more. It has a 35% fresh rating.

On the specialty side, "The Imitation Game" biopic, starring Benedict Cumberbatch, earned $482,000 from 4 theaters, for a whopping per-theater average of $120,500, the second-best showing of the year after "The Grand Budapest Hotel" ($220,000 per theater). "The Imitation Game" has an 85% fresh rating.

I enjoyed Horrible Bosses, the first one, but the second one looks terrible. Not surprised it bombed.

Oh, and The Hunger Games better make what it can and fast because The Hobbit: Battle of the Five Armies looks like a BEAST. Not my thing, but the visuals are absolutely stunning. It's going to tear up the Xmas BO.

I find it funny the spin-off of "Madagascar", the fourth installment of that franchise and having nearly 10 years on that said franchise, got better reviews that Mockingjay.

On a side note, The Hobbit 3 I honestly feel will be the best of both the Hobbit series and one of the best big budget films of the year. Jackson really seems to be returning it to the war epic nature of the LOTR story and seems to have a lot more focus to it then the previous two installments. Can't wait.

Battle of the Five Armies will be an unstoppable juggernaut next month. Museum, Exodus, Inherent Vice, Top Five, and Big Eyes will all flop.

I am not surprised that Penguins bombed, they should have used the same voice cast from the the TV show. It is one of the rare times this happens, but the TV show voice cast has eclipsed the cast of the original film handily.

'flop' is a bit harsh for both 'penguins' and 'horrible bosses 2' - they both made less then their predecessors but I'm sure in the end with world wide box office they'll have some profit.

I'm not surprised with HB2 as I read that it doesn't reach the same level as the 1st one and I my own feeling after watching the trailer didn't convince me either. I'll watch it for free though.
