Jim Carrey Almost Played Brainiac in Tim Burton's Failed "Superman Lives"

Jim Carrey Almost Played Brainiac in Tim BurtonSubmit Comment
Back in 1998, Tim Burton was set to direct a brand new Superman movie, called "Superman Lives." Nicolas Cage was attached to star, Kevin Smith wrote the script, and Warner Bros threw millions of dollars at the project before killing it due to budget concerns.

Concept artist Rolf Mohr has now updated his blog with some new details about the failed film, including the fact that Jim Carrey and Gary Oldman were considered for the role of Brainiac, the main villain.

He wrote: "For 'Superman Lives' I was working mostly in the dark based on vague descriptions without seeing a script. At the time it all sounded rather crazy and confusing, with Brainiac's Skull Ship that could absorb anything it came across, Brainiac himself inside some sort of alien shape-shifting 'hybrid technology' which would open up and engulf people and grow ever larger, more limbs, etc... Then Superman also had alien tech in the form of the Eradicator, which could become a suit as well as transform into an 'Interceptor' ship... A giant biomechanical alien spider thing which had a body that could open up and smaller ones came out, etc, etc...

At the time I had no idea who had written it or that Tim Burton was on board to direct, but they told me Jim Carrey and Gary Oldman were being considered for Brainiac. It was interesting to read the script years later and see that Kevin Smith had actually done a pretty impressive job by introducing the Eradicator as a transforming suit in order to weave together all the requirements the producer wanted: 'No Superman suit, no flying... and a giant spider in the 3rd act.' He even managed to include 2 polar bears.

...and that giant spider went on to star in another WB stinker, Wild Wild West. Now, let's hear no more of this giant spider sh*t!

Wow. Almost played. Right up there with all the other "almost played" news of the last eight years.

Hilarious. Carrey dodged a bullet by not doing a movie a movie about a guy who can dodge bullets.

Not really seeing him as Brainiac though. More of a Riddler kind of guy. And he played that character. So why the f*ck would he come back for such a project to enact a character that doesn't speak to his comedic strengths?

I smell bullsh*t on this one.

...."almost played" does not equal twenty year-old third-hand hearsay from a concept artist.

Christ man, just make up your own news already.
