Disney's "John Carter" Actually Cost Over $300 Million to Make

It was recently reported that Disney returned the rights to the "John Carter" property to Edgar Rice Burroughs' estate after the film only managed to earn $284 million worldwide on a budget of $250 million.

The studio already said that it lost more than $100 million, but now comes word that the budget was much higher than $250 million. According to Forbes, the British tax authority revealed that they paid Disney $43 million to shoot "John Carter" in London, adding that the total budget was $306.6 million.

With a budget that high, plus a massive market campaign and revenue splits, it's been estimated that the studio needed to earn more than $600 million to break even. Disney didn't come anywhere near that number.

But that's not stopping Burroughs's company from seeking another partner to bring another installment to the big screen.

Yes, we know. There was news to this affect several months ago, something along the line of "t cost much more than 200 mil to make". But thanks for finally catching up, I guess.

Anyway, not a bad movie, not nearly as bad as many say, but Disney didn't get their money's worth. Just a really bad idea to catch in on Avatar and Star Wars with a movie set on a planet we all know is a dead dirt orb.

You know, people have to have at least some modic*m of reasoning to suspend incredulity.

Poorly marketed, too. But no audience anyway.

I understand your math, Alex, since you didn't say one should add 25 to 43, but again, news came many moths ago that shooting costs plus advertising exceeded the 300mil make, so I would guess that the total is actually more like north of 350mil, which means Disney lost perhaps some 75 mil.

Perhaps rentals and home video sales will cover the difference...

i said it before, like the storyline, but is 300 million dollars really THAT necessary to make the film? i remember films like district 9 were made for about 30 million

2 things that they made a mistake when it came to this movie... 1 Disney made the mistake that EVERYBODY knew about the John Cater story's when the fact was that they were over 100 years old ... 2 the trailer for the movie didn't really do much for it so it really didn't peek much people's interest
