"Guardians of the Galaxy" is Struggling in China Due to Terrible Subtitles

"Guardians of the Galaxy" is Struggling in China Due to Terrible SubtitlesSubmit Comment
"Guardians of the Galaxy" is not only one of the best reviewed films of the year, but is also a massive hit for Marvel, grossing $733 million worldwide. Despite being in theaters all over the world for some time, it's only now that the movie is being released in China.

The country has become incredibly important to big budget films, since it's the world's second-biggest movie market and is on its way to becoming the first. That's why it's incredibly disappointing for Marvel to see "Guardians of the Galaxy" struggle in China due to poorly translated Chinese subtitles.

Critics and fans are complaining that the subtitles are ruining the humor of the film, an element that made it so popular elsewhere. So how bad is it? According to China Daily, there are at least 80 translation mistakes. "Aside from a lot of mistranslations, the subtitles failed to show the original feel of the movie, such as jokes and puns," said the news outlet. "We cannot help but doubt the professionalism of the translator."

Some examples of humor that was lost in translation are: In the film, Rocket is constantly insulated by being called "weasel" or "rodent," which has been translated to "small raccoon." In a different scene, Star-Lord's sexual advances are referred to as "pelvic sorcery," which has been translated to "rhetoric sorcery."

Director James Gunn took to Twitter to poke fun at the ridiculous translations, writing: "Interplanetary Unusual Attacking Team - opens Friday in China!"

What's funny is, despite this dilemma, WITH China's box office numbers it is about to beat X-Men at the global box office. They are behind by only like $15 million. Hard to believe.

Maybe it should have been shrouded in smog and made in a third world country with substandard, hazardous materials ... then maybe they would've gotten it.

Maybe if they had Jackie Chan play all the parts, it would have done better -

He does all his own stunts, you know ....
