James Cameron Discusses Getting "Terminator" Rights Back in 2019

James Cameron Discusses Getting "Terminator" Rights Back in 2019Submit Comment
While celebrating the 30th anniversary of "The Terminator" at the Egyptian Theater in Hollywood, James Cameron spoke about his involvement with the new films currently in development.

"I'm friendly with the filmmakers, the writer Laeta Kalogridis has worked with me on projects," he said. "I'm hoping it's great. I'd like them to get it right, and based on the script that I read there's a pretty good chance that it could. It looks like it could be fun."

When asked if he's worried the new films could hurt the franchise, Cameron replied: "It's not my problem. It's like being a grandparent, the kids come over and you can send them back. When I walked away from the franchise, I had to do it with the sense that I can invest in emotion. To me, it's all upside, because if it's good, it's good for Arnold (Schwarzenegger), my friend Laeta and if it's not good? It doesn't bother me personally."

The new trilogy is being rushed into development, mostly because rights to franchise will revert back to Cameron in 2019. Does that mean he's interested in returning to "The Terminator" films. "I haven't really thought that far ahead yet," he explained. "I've got plenty of time to think about it. It might be fun to completely re-invent the franchise. A lot has to do with what happens with it in the meantime, people may have 'Terminator' fatigue."

It would be better if he got the rights back, that way he can hire people who will make much better Terminator films. But that won't happen and we'll keep getting Terminator Salvation-like garbage.

Most probably.

People might lose that "fatigue" if you at least produced a damned big-budget remake, doofus. But you have Avatar to milk, much to the groaning of thinking cinephiles worldwide....

By the way, The Abyss sucks.

Although it could be epic should Cameron return, I think that ship has sailed. By that time, Arnie will be pushing 70 too!!
