Robert Downey Jr Would Make "Iron Man 4" If Mel Gibson Directs

Robert Downey Jr Would Make "Iron Man 4" If Mel Gibson DirectsSubmit Comment
At one point, Mel Gibson was one of Hollywood's top actors and directors. But after his endless racist, sexist and anti-Semitic rants, he has become a pariah. And while most of Hollywood's elite want nothing to do with him, there are some who have publicly defended him.

One of those people is Robert Downey Jr, who understands what it's like to have it all and then quickly lose it, only to be given a second chance. Back in January, Downey spoke with Marvel executives to see if there's a place for Gibson in the Marvel universe.

The studio made it very clear that it won't work with an anti-Semite. But Downey isn't giving up. In fact, he recently suggested that "Iron Man 4" should be directed by Gibson.

In a new interview, Deadline said: "Marvel badly wants 'Iron Man 4' and you've said you aren't doing it. How about the idea you'll do that movie if Mel directs it?" Downey responded: "Correct. Why not? That movie would be bananas."

It's not clear whether Downey would ever say that he'll only return for "Iron Man 4" if Gibson directs it, but it would be interesting to see how Marvel would respond.

Question: Do you want Mel Gibson to direct "Iron Man 4"?

Of course we want Mad Mel back! He's an outstanding director.

Alex obviously hates Gibson but he's unaware that Mel donated a lot of money to Jewish charities and he did apologise many many times. What else do you want from him?

Just move on already!

This is sort of an odd ultimatum for Downey to push on the studio. Of course Mel Gibson is a hell of an actor and director, but "IRON MAN 4 - DIRECTED BY MEL GIBSON" would just appear bizarre on the credits.

Disney/Marvel is only concerned about the bottom line and Downey is clearly aware of this. He knows that he is just trolling Marvel with this demand.
Deaft0ne writes:

Got cut off,

By demanding this, it would alienate a large portion of the audience that despise Gibson for his behavior.

So this will never happen.

Nobody knows rage, silent building, blood boiling rage like Mel Gibson. Look at the way he directed Braveheart and see how the English pushed William Wallace to the brink to take action in arms and rally to become a symbol of freedom for his fellow Scotsmen. Now if he could bring that rage to Tony Stark's character to give him motive to construct an incredible line of badass Iron Man suits, none ever seen before, because Stark was pushed to the brink that would be worth seeing. Perhaps the death of Pepper. Oh wait Shane Black already tried that - and she reanimated back. I think they need to kill Pepper for real then show a dark side of Stark - which is where Mel would excel as a director of a revenge driven story. But because of all the anti-semetic rants, sadly I don't see Mel being given much more opportunities on Hollywood - despite how much RDJ wants to vouch for him. Never bite the hand that feeds.

@Deaft0ne
Yeah but think about it. He's perfect and a somewhat appropriate follow-up to "Lethal Weapon" writer Shane Black. Imagine it? Gibson has done culture clash war films for years from Apocalypto all the way back to Braveheart. He's done action films in the classic sense like "Mad Max" and "Lethal Weapon". The man is perfect for bringing Iron Man back to a grounded war film like the first one. Heck if they ever did a real Mandarin story this guy would nail it! The only downside is that Disney rarely hires people with a criminal past and unfortunately Gibson has his demons. But man I'm tired of people giving this guy crap. He's an alcoholic, he has problems, but with Downey he has a kinship that could get him going again. Everyone here admits he was the best part of "Expendables 3". Imagine if he was given creative control and allowed to work with Downey. My friend we'd get the "Iron Man" sequel that no one would dare argue against. A gritty, but fun, in-depth action film that would make the other Marvel film directors burn with envy. I totally support this!

If Alex is really Jewish than he should know about his own religion: it's called the day of forgiveness which happens only once a year but he obviously doesn't believe in that practice.

@Sleuth

I'm sure that Gibson is very capable of directing a solid Marvel film. No one questions his directorial abilities. But the studio would not risk upsetting fans just because Gibson is talented behind the camera.

Additionally, RDJ's argument is very one-sided. Sure, Mel paid RDJ's insurance liability and cast him in The Singing Detective when no one else would hire him, but this was a time prior to all of Mel Gibson's incidents and prior to the financial juggernaut that is now the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

So for RDJ to say he will only do IM4 if Marvel lets Mel direct it because Mel cast him in a movie a decade ago is not a realistic demand and I assume Marvel will tell RDJ the same thing.
Sleuth1989 writes:

@Deaft0ne
I understand the ramifications. I just wonder if he'd be as hated if he took on a big film. Most of the people I see commenting on stuff about him miss him as a director and seem to care very little about his personal stuff. I'm just saying if you can sell Mike Tyson, former rapist, in "Hangover", I see this being possible.

I don't get the double standard in Hollywood.
Mel said some things...so get over it...you should be able to seperate private life and work...I mean Victor Salva is a convicted pedophile and yet he still find work in Hollywood.
TheWolverine writes:
on October 4th, 2014 at 7:07:47 PM

Mel deserves another chance. Everyone's done sh*t they're not proud of, he was just unfortunate enough to get caught on tape saying it......multiple times lol
Deaft0ne writes:
on October 4th, 2014 at 7:13:06 PM

@hottentott

Victor Salva has had moderate success with Powder and Jeepers Creepers but again, the MCU is a totally different animal. Disney/Marvel has to be conscious of international appeal and marketing where the MCU films make even more profit.

Salva is not making films for that market so he is not a very good example.

I agree people should get over what Mel said/did but there sure as hell will not be some wellspring of forgiveness coming from Marvel just because Mel did RDJ a favor 12 years ago.
Minkοwski writes:

Wow. Downey says something willfully stupid, and someone turns it into "news". Whatever. And Downey's a d*ck. Either do the damned fourth movie or cut your strings with Marvel. Eventually they'll get tired of your power-tripping and replace you with someone who better resonates with the audiences that matter. Dumb ass American.

Zzzzzzz.
