"Black Widow" Movie Almost Happened Before "Iron Man"

"Black Widow" Movie Almost Happened Before "Iron Man"Submit Comment
Now that Scarlett Johansson has played the Black Widow in several Marvel films, many fans are demanding that the studio make a solo "Black Widow" movie. And while it's still unclear whether that will ever happen, it turns out that it came really close in 2004.

After coming off the success of "X-Men" and "X2," writer David Hayter was approached by Lionsgate (which owned the rights) about writing a "Black Widow" script and make it his directorial debut. Hayter agreed and created a faithful adaptation of the spy's origin story.

The reason why Lionsgate was pushing to get this made was because lots of other female-led action films were performing well, including "Resident Evil," "Lara Croft: Tom Raider" and "Kill Bill." There were also a few failures like "Ultraviolet" and "BloodRayne," but one specific movie caused the death of the "Black Widow" film.

That movie is Charlize Theron's "Aeon Flux," which came out in 2005. It was trashed by critics (10% on RottenTomatoes) and earned only $52 million worldwide on a $62 million budget.

Hayter spoke about this three years ago, stating: "'Aeon Flux didn't open well, and three days after it opened, the studio said, 'We don't think it's time to do this movie.' I accepted their logic in terms of the saturation of the marketplace, but it was pretty painful."

Iron Man was alright though. Not sure I'd pay to see a Black Widow movie.

Jesus f*ck, Aeon Flux was AWFUL. And based on an awful American anime to boot. But Theron's hot...too bad the damned bitch can't carry a movie as well as even Beckinsdale and what's her name from Resident Evil.
Minkοwski writes:

Iron Man....that's it. Best Marvel comic book movie. Hasn't been f*cking surpassed as of yet. Simple, character driven, strong lead role, simple concept, and minimal CGI. Wonderful way to make a modern comic book movie. And then they went off the f*cking rails.

But no, unless ScarJo is getting naked, no one gives two f*ck for a Black Widow movie, and never will. Not to mention even an I, Robot kind of grat shot won't do because we've all seen her cellutious ass already.

Oh, and f*ck me, UltraViolet was even worse! Basically an early version of that Jupiter Rising sh*t. One of the worst science fiction films I have ever seen!

Just give her a tight white t-shirt and have it raining all the time and the movie will do well. Trust me.

Two reasons why a Black Widow movie would be successful:

1) It’s part of the Marvel (Avengers) franchise, duh... and there’s no reason to think a female-lead, spy-action installment would somehow kill their winning streak.

2) By the end of this coming week, Lucy will have made over $400 million worldwide. So spare me any notion that ScarJo can’t carry a movie well enough to turn a profit.

ALEX,

You HAVE to realize that this site needs moderation. Any other site i visit would lever stand for the blatant bullsh*t that is allowed for the first six or seven comments on EVERY SINGLE THREAD. The *sshole is clearly abusing your site and annoying the sh*t out of most of the other members. He does not contribute, does not relent, and does not provide anythign worthwhile to this site in any way. I have several social media accounts as well as a pod case with nearly 70,000 listners. I promise you this site will receive negative press unless this is resolved. No one is going to want to go on visiting this site if this sh*t is allowed. I will also record and contact your advertisers and allow them a cut and paste of the nonesense that you allow on here. I am sure that they would not be pleased with the demographic you are catering to. I have been here since 2009 and if I am forced to do this in order to make mine, and others experience here more enjoyable, I will. And if I am forced to contact advertisers, I promise you I will no longer be a member of this site after. You need to decide who is more important, a contributing member, or some *sshole you are scared of banning. You did it to Dark for MUCH less!

I really dont think Alex = Mink. And yeah, he has banned you for a lot less. Youre an annoying pain in the ass but no where near as monopolizing as Mink. He comes on here to pretty much SOLEY piss people off. And I know, I know, we feed him by talking about him but after a while, mission accomplished, your pissing people off my being a p*ssy. i remember when ultraviolet and aeon flux came out, thought they were bizarre, like way more bizarre than the fifth element...and that was a great film, the comedy kept everything in line including the elderly bilbo baggins aka veeto cornellious....somewhere in the list they forgot about catwoman, another female-led film that was also trashed by critics and rated 9% on rottentomatoes...there's also elektra, although it didn't perform well i still thought it was a better performance from jennifer garner than that of hers in daredevil

I don't know ... I would've gathered that the horse-faced Jennifer Gardner's lackluster performance in Elektra couldn't almost jackhammered the nail on that f*cking coffin.

While that's good that mystique could be a threat with suh enhanced powers that was super annoying that none of the 13 cast members got any real development besides her and Xavier. It was a little disappointing how little everyone else was used and while Quicksilver was cool it was kind of silly he was just used for one scene. But that's good about X2 still existing. Means we might both get out way. New and old members may get continues stories. It be a unique cinematic universe to go back and forth.

And yeah Alex is annoying in that regard. This site needs a major remodel overhaul and stat. LOL
