University of Baltimore Offering Course on Marvel Films

University of Baltimore Offering Course on Marvel FilmsSubmit Comment
University of Baltimore has announced that it's now offering a course examining Marvel's cinematic universe, which would include the study of the storylines and learning about the studio's box office strategy.

The course will be taught by Arnold T. Blumberg, a comics and pop culture historian and scholar, who will help his students understand our culture's obsessions with superheroes and supervillains. "One thing we'll do is dive into the impact of the 'Guardians of the Galaxy' film, which proved two things: Mainstream movie audiences are not remotely tired of superhero movies; and Marvel Studios can now release a sci-fi adventure that actually features talking trees and raccoons," said Blumberg. "It's not that they're getting away with it — they've created a universe in which fans completely accept these developments, and they're ready for even more."

He went on to compare Marvel films to "Star Trek" and "Star Wars," stating: "Every generation has a modern media mythology that serves as a framework for entertaining as well as educating about ethics, morality, issues of race, gender, class, and so on. For the past several years, 'Harry Potter' and 'Lord of the Rings' have served in that role for tens of millions. When I was younger, it was the first 'Star Wars' series, which I saw in the theater. For me, that saga — along with many other science fiction stories — provided that essential exploration of the hero journey, the struggle of good vs. evil, in a mainstream pop culture context."

Really, there's no f*ckign need to teach people how to make comic book mvoies. They'll never get the chance anyway.

Just teach them the solid foundations of proper cinematography, editing and directing.

Besides, we do not need a bunch of amateurs making bullsh*t knock-offs of Iron Man.

Really sad UofB has to whore their their curriculum out like that just to get people to buy classes. Reminds me of that sh*t a few years back where some douchebag prof thought he'd teach comic book history classes instead of actual history.

f*cking America.

^ or people joining the jediism religion based on the spiritual ideas of the jedi's in SW :)
But i guess it's as good(or bad) as any other religion.
Also funny that people wanted to learn the language from Avatar and now Game of Thrones .
Geeks needs to learn the difference between fiction and Real life !

"Well, Mr. Jenkins, it says here you have an M.A. degree in Marvel...Cinematic Universe?"

"That’s right. I completed two separate graduate courses in writing my thesis regarding the alternative family structure unit of the Fantastic Fo—"

It might be interesting to study the Marvel formula and why it is so succesful.

10 years ago most moviegoers would say "Iron Man who?" Now it's a household character.

Wow, how much weed did they have to give the dean to get this improved ?

When I first read this, I thought it was some esteemed college that tried to establish this course: like University of Phoenix or that art college that asks you to draw the side profile of the turtle.

Arnold T. Blumberg, a comics and pop culture historian and scholar

1. Arnold has never been laid or touched a "boobie" or

2 Arnold still plays Magic/Vampire: The Masquerade/Dungeons & Dragons/etc. with his "friends" from high school or

3. He lives with his mom or

4. He plays on an X Box almost 24/7 or

5. He goes to comic-cons and dresses up as Thor, but never wins the contest or

6. Submitted artwork and/or writing to that greazy wop from Marvel back in the 80s who turned him down

7. Suck off Joe Quesada every time Joe comes to town
