Matthew McConaughey in Talks for Stephen King's "The Stand" Film

Matthew McConaughey in Talks for Stephen KingSubmit Comment
Deadlines is reporting that Warner Bros is pushing forward with "The Stand" movie, based on Stephen King's apocalyptic novel, and has made an offer to Matthew McConaughey to play the role of Randall Flagg.

Flagg is the personification of evil, a demonic figure who wreaks havoc after a plague kills most of the population. The character was played by Jamie Sheridan in the mini-series adaptation, and has appeared numerous time in King's other works.

The new movie will be directed by Josh Boone (The Fault in Our Stars), who's currently in talks to direct the latest "Lestat" film based on the books by Anne Rice. Meanwhile, McConaughey will soon be seen in Christopher Nolan's "Interstellar" sci-fi movie.

Hmmmm, although The Stand is one of my least favorite King books, and though I'm not much of a fan of him anyway, seems an adaptation of IT is more appropriate. Hopefully one follows if this project is successful. Certainly the book was a long-winded bore. Not sure about Matt either since it's hard to see him in any role that isn't either surfer boy snark or country hick snark. Cast should be a bit younger too imo.

The book is 1000 pages frickin' long! There's no way they can do it justice in one movie, unless they want to expand it into LOTR like franchise.

This would actually be good casting. Randall Flagg has the disposition of a charismatic, country type guy as described in the novel. But this really needs to be a trilogy to give the book justice.

Nah. Not a chance. LOTRs is three books. They managed to chop The Hobbit into three films because LOTRs was a huge hit. Even still, no one with any sanity thinks The Hobbit films compare to the LOTRs films.

Regardless, The Stand, while popular with male teenage disaffected loners and losers, doesn't have nearly the cast of characters and events as LOTRs, and the world is far too drab to merit much profitable scene-chewing.

More than likely they'll make a 2.5 hour long movie that'll get chopped to hell in editing, which will produce a grossly inferior project, which will put Hollywood off from adapting to film any of King's other lengthy works.

Should have gone to quality TV, like BB or Dexter. Would have done the project far more justice. Same goes for IT, which could be mind-boggling great if done right on Showtime or similar.

@Boogiel.

@mink

Well the abc miniseries is 6 hours long so they could do two 3 hour films. The story cannot be covered in just one film without sucking.

The stand wouldn't last as a LOTR type series. It's fan bare just isn't as high in my opinion. I'd watch regardless because it has Stephen Kings name on it and damned if I don't love me a good Stephen king adaption

For the love of god just don't make it like that price of crap 6 hour thing they made awhile back. What f*cking garbage waste of time that was...

Another adaptation of The Stand ? No offense to the Braniacs who decided to run with this, but I'd rather watch Eli Roth's version of The Cell or even a remake of It than another f*cking version of The Stand, which is basically King ripping off the Apocalypse.
