"Lucy" Destroys "Hercules" at the Box Office

Posted: July 27th, 2014 by WorstPreviews.com Staff
"Lucy" Destroys "Hercules" at the Box OfficeSubmit Comment
Scarlett Johansson's "Lucy" action film we up against Dwayne Johnson's "Hercules" action film at the box office this weekend, with "Lucy" coming out a clear winner with $44 million in domestic earnings.

"Lucy" is directed by Luc Besson (The Professional, The Fifth Element). The film had the biggest opening of any film in his career and earned nearly four times as much as his "Colombiana" action film, starring Zoe Saldana.

"Lucy" cost $40 million to make, which means that it's already profitable. And with an international release still on its way, the new movie will be a major hit for everyone involved. It has a 58% fresh rating on RottenTomatoes.

"Hercules" had to settle for second place with a $29 million opening. That's a disappointing result for a movie that cost $100 million. But with another $29 million coming from international box office, "Hercules" has a good chance of ending up with a total of $200 million from the worldwide box office. The film has a 62% fresh rating.

Meanwhile, Rob Reiner's "And So It Goes" romantic comedy, starring Michael Douglas and Diane Keaton, opened to only $4.6 million, which landed it in 8th place. Not a surprise for a film that has a 15% fresh rating.

On the specialty side, Philip Seymour Hoffman's "A Most Wanted Man" spy thriller was able to take tenth place despite being released in only 361 theaters. It has a 90% fresh rating.

And finally, Woody Allen's "Magic in the Moonlight," starring Colin Firth and Emma Stone, was released in 17 theaters and earned $425,730, which is a per-location average of $25,043. A decent result, but far worse than either "Blue Jasmine" or "Midnight in Paris." It has a 60% fresh rating.

No surprise, it's the better movie. And Hercules was poorly marketed. Not to mention Scarlet has cross-gender cachet, for some reason.

I will always give Besson my money. Leon is in my top ten favorite films. I think. It changes a lot.

Lucy looks like a sh*tty version of 5th element

I thought the family would suck but I liked it

How the hell did Lucy make that much? Especially with such a sh*tty concept. Scarjo looks like she would just lay there in bed and be no fun

DAYUM! Where is Eddie Murphy when you need him? Hercules! Hercules! Hercules!

Ever notice how everything in America is violent? We don't say Lucy outperforms Hercules, we say Lucy DESTROYS Hercules.

No wonder Michael Bay is damned popular.

I can't believe how a simpleton red hair with her Cuban husband would won box office...oh wait, wrong lucy.
alleyg21 writes:

I had zero faith in ratners ability to produce a solid action film without the comedy. Lucy is pretty much a win win Besson has been consistent and scarlett never disappoints...soo soo fine

Avirex writes:

Johansson is about as convincing in action roles as Eddie Murphy is as a singer.

Lucy and Hercules both look like sh*t for different reasons.

Scorpion King actually opened bigger 12 years ago at $36 million with an overall $90 million domestically which all adjusted for inflation is pretty solid. Maybe if Dwayne had done a Scorpion King sequel it'd done better business. Mediocre movies no matter what though.

Both of them are Meh, The Rock's film is more consistent but typical mehh action film ,and Lucy is a little weird and in the "What the hell are they trying to do?" kind of way.

Someone has to.

I saw Lucy and genuinely enjoyed it. Despite the marketing, it's less of an action film or superhero film (though it does feature a highlight car chase) and more of a high-concept visual mind-bender...

...kind of like Transendence meets Tree of Life meets Akira.
