"Iron Man 3" Helmer Shane Black to Direct "Predator" Reboot

"Iron Man 3" Helmer Shane Black to Direct "Predator" RebootSubmit Comment
When Robert Rodriguez announced that he's directing a reboot of "Predator," he said that the plan would be to start with a smaller story and then see if audiences want sequels, which would be bigger in size.

The film ended up grossing only $52 million domestically on a budget of $40 million. Thanks to foreign ticket sales, the reboot ended up with worldwide earnings of $127 million. A decent result, but much less than the studio was expecting.

Now comes word that Shane Black (Iron Man 3) has been hired to write and direct another "Predator" reboot. It's not clear whether the new movie will tie into the existing installments.

Black actually has a connection to the franchise. He was already the writer of "Lethal Weapon" and "Monster Squad" when the original 1986 film was being made. The studio approached him to do a re-write and actually offered him a role in the movie to get him to look at the script.

As I said earlier, Arnie is Predator, so without him, you don't have a movie.

Was Predators technically a reboot, though? I think that one can still tie in continuity-wise with the first two films. Oh, and I've got a revolutionary idea on who could-and-should direct any attempted version of a new Predator movie:

John motherf*cking McTiernan

Predators was a sidequel. It was considered a reboot early on, but the RR script, the one with Dutch, was written as a sequel. Dutch was lost in rewrites and thus Predators became more of a sidequel.

I agree with Minkowski. Predator without Arnie is not Predator. I'd even be interested in seeing Surviving the Game recast with Arnie, Gary and Danny all cast as hunters of Predators .... that's the only story I would care for.

Shane should come out with a Lethal Weapon with an Anti-Semite Riggs and anxious, trigger happy Murtaugh, that will kill Riggs if he curses out his daughter and declares he will "f*cking kill her", if she tells her father how Riggs tries to prevent her from "running into the door jam. Repeatedly" ... All the while, Leo Getz has finally been found out, since he is burying bodies around the properties he is selling...

In the reboot, Hawkins survives this time. HA!

I'm surprised noone has brought up Shane Black's best movie (IMO) that is The Last Boy Scout...Black's screenplay plus Tony Scott's direction is a prime example of a great Saturday night popcorn flick...

Speaking of, Tony Scott made Boy Scout a sleeper success in homevideo & made gave another similar push to an up and comer named Tarantino with True Romance...

Who, if you notice, if you consider Tarantino's early worrks as more of a more amped up and more long winded Shane Black dialogues in how its based on pop culture, snarky & cynical back & forth between characters.

All in all, I think Shane would be a great addition to the Predator franchise. Iron Man has proved he 's earned it.

Interesting. Didn't he also in the original movie? I think he was the geek dude/ the one with glasses.

I enjoyed the "side sequel" Predators. Personally Thought the plot was neat but seriously, f*ck a full out reboot. That's just stupid.

What Rambo said.

Was going to post something identical but figured it was given.

Sure, the man has had a few decent films, but he plays a gay Hawaiian lumberjack in most of them.

Well I guess you guys prefer they stick with people like Adrien Brody and f*ckin Topher Grace.

I certainly don't but to each their own.

I don't know what to think of this. On one hand i love original - one of the best movies for me (simply stuck with me since i was a kid). But Shane black is perfectly capable director and even better writer that understands action movies from old school '80s perspective (in fact he did rewrites on original Predator). But on the other hand - just as mink mentioned it, part of the appeal of Predator is Arnie and another part is iconic Stan Winston design of the creature itself as well as his weapons. And i'm scared that that will get changed - Predator designs keeps getting worse after Predator 2.

I don't think reboot is necessary, as there are plenty of stories set in different times that could work in a sequel (real sf in space, mayans and conquistador, pirates, modern setting in Afghanistan etc etc....)
minkowski writes:

I'd rather they not remake Predator at all. Not like they're to get it right. Not like they could even remake Total Recall and RoboCop. The only reboot they've done right is Dredd, but that was a) a low bar and b) not really a reboot.

They need to just leave it alone, and Black needs to go back under the rock from which he came.

This sounds about as good as a prequel to the film Alien.

It's sad that with Stan Winston gone no one can make an original new movie monster. They just keep rehashing old ones and screwing that up royally. Part of what made the originals so awesome was the use of an original monster no one had ever seen or heard of before. The sky was the limit for story. Acid blood? Why not? Super camo that bends light? What alien hunter would be without it?
KillerCOck writes:

But it's happening. Ya it could still fall apart but as of now that's the case.

They could cast Butler too. Why the f*ck not? haha!

Shane Black has been one of my favorite directors since The Last Boy Scout, love that he's doing a new Predator, perfect for the role!
