"The Amazing Spider-Man 3" Delayed Until 2017?

"The Amazing Spider-Man 3" Delayed Until 2017?Submit Comment
Sony recently said that its planning to have a Spider-Man film in theaters every year. But the studio is apparently seeing issues and has delayed "The Amazing Spider-Man 3" until 2017.

The third film was set to hit theaters on June 10th, 2016, but AICN is claiming that Sony will no longer have the film ready by then. It's not clear why the delay is happening, but it may have a lot to do with the franchise's diminishing earnings.

"The Amazing Spider-Man 2" grossed $700 million, which is less than "The Amazing Spider-Man" ($758 million) and less than all three of Sam Raimi's "Spider-Man" movies.

We know that Andrew Garfield and director Marc Webb are returning for "The Amazing Spider-Man 3" and that the script is already being written.

It's possible that Sony is taking its time to get the third film right, especially since these movies are now part of a greater Spider-Man universe. But it's also possible that the studio is expecting the worse, which is that "The Amazing Spider-Man 3" will bring in even smaller earnings than all previous installments.

Better yet...how about delaying it indefinitely?

It's time for Sony to face facts: they're sitting on a failed franchise reboot. Yes, the two ASP have made money, but are nowhere near as popular as Sony was hoping (like, Avengers or even X-Men level) or even as divisive as Man of Steel.

The last movie came and went. Nobody is raving about it. Nobody is even still talking about it. Nobody cares. The franchise has amounted to one big "meh". So pushing the third installment back to 2017 likely means one of two things:

1. Sony will attempt to work some miracle magic into salvaging said franchise from mediocrity to greatness.

2. Theyíre killing it altogether without yet outright announcing as much, hoping that it will just fade from memory enough to attempt yet another reboot.

Both Superman Returns and Rise of the Silver Surfer made descent money and, initially, both Warner Bros. and 20th Century Fox announced plans for sequels/threequels. Never happened. They were postponed and then forgotten. We still may very well see another ASP from Sony ...just donít be surprised if we donít.

If they want Amazing Spiderman 3 to perform better, they should perhaps refrain from revealing EVERY SINGLE ACTION SCENE in the trailers and commercials. I think in terms of total time, there may have been a minute and a half of action that i hadn't seen prior to the movie's release.

The excessive over-promotion is what hurt this sequel. It's not necessary to have 10 trailers and 25 tv spots for a f*cking movie and then to run them into the ground all over the place.

I honestly would not be disappointed if they ended up scrapping the whole thing. He literally saw his girlfriend die and was still able to bounce back by the end of the movie. What more can they do to this guy? Now Harry needs a 6-man team to either take a blood sample or kill him even though he knows it's Peter. Just take his Aunt hostage or threaten to expose him.

This "failed franchise" has made Sony one and half billion dollars.

Really, about what are you idiots babbling? In what universe is a net profit of over one billion American dollars a "failure"? Because they didn't make TWO billion?

lol. I love it when random internet nobodies talk about an industry about which they know absolutely nothing beyond what Box Office Mojo tells them.

"The excessive over-promotion is what hurt this sequel. It's not necessary to have 10 trailers and 25 tv spots for a f*cking movie and then to run them into the ground all over the place."

Really? And if they hadn't over-promoted TASM 2, you'd say UNDER-promotion hurt it.

Really now, oh cinematic marketing genius, where is the advertising "sweet spot" for The Amazing Spiderman? And once you have your answer, ship it on over to Sony because I'm sure they'd love to have access to your brilliant input.

Better yet, why not ask them for a corporate job, since you have it all figured out?

Whatever.

The real deal is that TASM 2's 758 mil is based on 6.4 weeks to TASM 1's 14.9 weeks.

Durrr. See, I can read Box Office Mojo, too!

Next time, morons, don't let Alex's "thinking" do the work for you.

Spiderman was cool. Get over it. I had a blast while watching it. Plus, I want these movies to succeed. We all do, don't we? I mean, if studios keep getting the sh*t kicked out of their profits, then we'll eventually get less of these mega-produced movies. I say quit hating the blockbusters. They're what keeps the industry afloat and able to give us more.

I don't think anyone is arguing the fact that Sony has turned a profit with the franchise reboot.

@Mink
Whereas I agree with you, I do think that itís such a massive waste of time calling people up on their stupidity. Do you really have nothing better to do? You sound educated and seem to prefer applying a derived larger picture opinion rather than a simple minded regurgitation. Is there no site that can offer a better discussion? Or, do you just like picking on people that donít have the intelligence to fight back? ďA fight you have an advantage in is just an assaultĒ 10 points if you know where thatís from (if you majored in history like me)
Deaft0ne writes:

@The Boosh

Otis Minkowski is wrong, the production budget for TASM 2 was $255 million and the marketing budget was $190 million=$445 million.

The movie has made $700 million so far but only a profit of $255 million which is the production budget. So the film has yet to turn a profit and with Transformers and Planet of the Apes and Hercules and so on being released, it's not going to make another $200 million to barely be in the black.

Like I said, the over-promotion is what hurt this sequel. Showing nearly all the action scenes and plot contrivances in the ads and trailers makes people want to see the movie less not more.

So in promoting the next one, less is more would be a better strategy.
Deaft0ne writes:

less, not more.
The Boosh writes:
on June 17th, 2014 at 12:45:32 AM

@ Deaft0ne
You counted the production budget twice.
Deaft0ne writes:
on June 17th, 2014 at 3:42:41 AM

@The Boosh

I didn't count the remaining $255 million because it would be assumed that it would go towards production and promotion of Venom and The Sinister Six.

Both will most likely have budgets of $100 million+ and the promotion will be at least $50 million as a lowball estimate.

So TASM 2 is still in the red if you consider the spinoff films. This would be why the 3rd film is being delayed to 2017.

Sony sees the diminishing returns already.
The Boosh writes:

Sony's poor investment plan doesn't effect whether TASM 2 delivered profit.
