"Jurassic World" Director Reveals Major Plot Details

"Jurassic World" Director Reveals Major Plot DetailsSubmit Comment
In a new interview, director Colin Trevorrow cleared up some rumors about his upcoming "Jurassic World" film, which is the fourth installment in the "Jurassic Park" franchise that's set to hit theaters on June 12th, 2015.

"'Jurassic World' takes place in a fully functional park on Isla Nublar," said Trevorrow. "It sees more than 20,000 visitors every day. You arrive by ferry from Costa Rica. It has elements of a biological preserve, a safari, a zoo, and a theme park. There is a luxury resort with hotels, restaurants, nightlife and a golf course. And there are dinosaurs. Real ones. You can get closer to them than you ever imagined possible. Itís the realization of John Hammondís dream, and I think youíll want to go there."

He goes on to explain that the story takes place 22 years after the original film and dinosaurs are no longer as fascinating to people as they once were. To attract more visitors, scientist create a new, bigger dinosaur. And that's when things go bad.

"Our relationship with technology has become so woven into our daily lives. We've become numb to the scientific miracles around us. We take so much for granted," Trevorrow continued. "What if, despite previous disasters, they built a new biological preserve where you could see dinosaurs walk the earth. And what if people were already kind of over it? We imagined a teenager texting his girlfriend with his back to a T-Rex behind protective glass. For us, that image captured the way much of the audience feels about the movies themselves. 'We've seen CG dinosaurs. What else you got?' Next year, you'll see our answer."

"There will be one new dinosaur created by the park's geneticists. The gaps in her sequence were filled with DNA from other species, much like the genome in the first film was completed with frog DNA. This creation exists to fulfill a corporate mandate ó they want something bigger, louder, with more teeth. And that's what they get."

Regarding the rumor that there will be good dinosaurs, he said: "There's no such thing as good or bad dinosaurs. There are predators and prey. The T-Rex in 'Jurassic Park' took human lives, and saved them. No one interpreted her as good or bad. This film is about our relationship with animals, how we react to the threat they pose to our dominance on earth as a species. We hunt them, we cage them in zoos, we admire them from afar and we try to assert control over them. Chris Pratt's character is doing behavioral research on the raptors. They aren't trained, they can't do tricks. He's just trying to figure out the limits of the relationship between these highly intelligent creatures and human beings."

That sounds a lot less stupid than the way it was previously explained. Honestly, I'm going to see this movie no matter what.

Well, at least it sounds like they're being genuinely conceptual about this one, inspired by new ideas or, more specifically, a fresh and relevant perspective of the original idea.

@Tan
Yeah, all the talk of Pratt training "good" raptors to battle evil mutant dinosaurs sounded sketchy as f*ck. I have a sneaking suspicion they're trying to emulate pieces of Planet of the Apes, but with dinosaurs.

"Really interesting looking movie with liam neeson and the director of The Lookout. Which is an underated JGL film"

Maybe, but this old-man Liam kicking ass with a gun is getting kind of old; quite simply, none of those movies have reached the height of Taken. So if all we're going to see is more of Neeson with a gun shooting bad guys while growling in his light Irish brogue, I might just skip it.

Not-great Liam action movies: Unknown, The Grey, Taken 2, Non-Stop...

Don't get me wrong, I think the guy is fairly awesome, and I'd love to see him tear it up in a smart remake of a Bronson film such as Death Wish or The Mechanic, but we've seen enough of these cheap filler action movies he's been doing since his middle-aged bad-ass career took off in 2009.

I won't even discuss his two upcoming 2015 films Taken 3 and Run All night.

Anyway, the entire premise of JPW is a bit stupid.

People just aren't going to get tired of dinosaurs. They flock to zoos around the world just to view apes and pandas and King Cobras. They won't easily or quickly tire of seeing long-dead life from the Jurassic, not in one lifetime, and by the time they do, IF they do, another generation will arrive to continue the fascination.

Thus there's no reason for people to get bored, especially when there's only one dino park in the entire world. And thus there's no reason for dino-engineers to make larger, more bizarre dinosaurs.

I do think though this is Universal's chance to make a very compelling and extravagant world a la Pandora, but I serious doubt Trevor or the studio has Cameron's vision or passion. And they could add life from other geological periods, too; no need to limit the story to the Jurassic age or dinosaurs.

Unfortunately, if anything this will be just another a really huge run and jump non-interactive CGI adventure that will do brisk business and then die when the next tentpole arrives, just like Godzilla.
Attos writes:
on May 29th, 2014 at 6:22:08 PM

^Agreed. I seriously can't imagine a scenario in which I would grow tired of looking at living dinosaurs. They would have to give me a job, because I would never leave.

C-Prime,

I just read your comment on the Kevin Smith page and though I agree with much of what you said, I felt compelled to remark on your first paragraph, which mentioned pay for the actors of Superman vs Batman, or Batman vs Superman, or JLA Begins, or whatever they're calling it.

You said that actor fees would swell or swamp the film's budgets, and I agree with you if WB does what you say they will, but I think they're going to lock Cavill and crew into a multi-movie contract, one that will set their pay accordingly.

Certain actors will receive certain deals. Affleck and Cavill, being the film's columnar leads, will get the best contracts, probably, and get locked into pay over their run with perhaps part of their fees paid by backend profits. That's how I would do it, with no certainty WB and DC can carry the franchise over to five or six films without bottoming out theatrical attendance.

Other performers, such as Gal Gadot, might receive pay in the form of gross profit percentage on an inverse sliding scale, if you will.

Regardless, if Warner's is smart, and so far they haven't demonstrated such mental prowess or ac*men, they'll lock all actors into a deal upfront before production begins.

Thank you for your intelligent and thoughtful comment.

"You've cloned Deaf and countless accounts and yet you pretend to be the virgin one but for you to know I was Always Bullit since day one."

lol. No I didn't. I haven't cloned any account other than Alex's, and I made that clear with my public and tacit admission.

Fact is, "Deaftone" cloned his own account to make it look like he could never be the cloner. "He" even said so under yet another account in a comment that stated such an act would throw suspicion off the cloner, because "who would think a troll would clone his own account"? Not the folks of WP, apparently, who are too busy making jokes to pay attention to what's going on. Goddamned hedonistic Eloi

Sadly, it required my tips regarding charmap for the unimaginative twit to realize he could "clone" other people's account. "He" couldn't come up with such a thought himself, of course, because all he can do is imitate, like a parrot.

As for you being who you are....lol. What a bunch of nonsense. "Bullitt" is a deranged fraud and everyone here knows it. I knew it from the moment you first posted under that account, circa 2011, but folks on WP aren't usually that paranoid or perceptive. And then there's all the bullsh*t with your various accounts and the sh*t with JB and "Lancelot"...

lol.

Whatever. It's your useless psychotic life wasted making accounts and f*cking with people, but face the facts: you're not clever enough to be amusing, not imaginative enough to be interesting, and not funny enough to be humorous. But do wee keep trying, I guess....?

P.S. Continue trying to throw suspicion on me, even though a) no one here, including me, gives a f*ck, and b) no one specifically cares what "Bullitt" or "Deaftone" have to say and they never will. You just don't have what it takes to command the attention of the masses, not even the bored, lost handful of us regulars, I'm afraid, and you never will.

This is my only account on this website, I never cloned it, and I am most certainly not bullit. You as much admitted that you made the clone account of me after I was really pissed off about it and said I was overreacting.

Your claims about me being other people on here have zero evidence to back them up and you know it.

As others have said, you have the web skills to do that kind of sh*t. I do not.

So please stop making baseless accusations against me that you know you can never ever prove because you know it's a lie.

Thanks.

As for admitting I cloned your account....I never said any such thing and I dare you to produce such a remark.

@mink

The cloned account of me has no space after the name. I remember checking it before and it did not have one.

I don't "live" on this site, I always have my phone with me and it takes a few seconds to check it. I don't have to be at home like you on a pc tower to go online.

Again, you can't prove I have any other accounts on here because I don't. I have no reason to make other ones. If I have an issue with someone I am not going to hide behind another account because it's pointless.

I am not a troll in any way whatsoever. You're just upset because no one is left on here that will put up with your sh*t anymore when you act combative.

It'd be a lot easier to argue for the sake of arguing a lot less mink. I know you like a challenge but now all you seem to do is just act very vindictive and mean to all of us on here if you disagree.

c-prime writes:

@ minkowski: Regarding the DC movies, that sounds totally plausible, nay probable.

I wish back-end deals became were a more prevalent aspect of film production today. I think it would induce top-tier talent to take on roles in lower-budgeted fare more often - ideally, films with greater substance than we typically find at the multiplex on a Friday night. Assuming the project is independent, the filmmaker's vision is protected from the critical oversight of some studio head focused more on the bottom line than the quality of the product(s) representing his place of work.

I think cinema could, in many ways, thrive as a consequence, but then I concede I'm getting a little too idealist: we aren't exactly talking about the cinema business but rather, the movie business. There's just no easy way to talk Sandra Bullock, Denzel Washington, or Johnny Depp out of their $20 million paydays, not unless it's a quote-unquote "passion project." Like whenever Depp does some quirky Hunter S. Thompson picture that gets panned.

And that raises a question: if only a handful of projects are made out of passion, what the f*ck inspired the other movies that make up an actor's filmography? I mean, sure, obviously the $20 million, but I feel like it's gotta be something else. As private as these people aspire to keep their lives and as devoted as much as they romanticize the industry and visual storytelling, I feel like there's gotta be something else that gets them out of bed/hiding and on a film set 12+ hours a day/six days a week.

...Nah, it's probably just the money.
