"Godzilla" Destroys Competition With $93 Million Box Office Opening

"Godzilla" Destroys Competition With $93 Million Box Office OpeningSubmit Comment
"Godzilla" was released in theaters over the weekend, easily surpassing expectations by grossing $93 million at the domestic box office. Internationally, the film earned another $103 million for a worldwide debut of $196 million.

"Godzilla," which has a 72% fresh rating on RottenTomatoes, cost $160 million to make, which means that it's already profitable. It currently has the second-best opening of 2014 after "Captain America: The Winter Soldier ($95 million). The film was able to, however, beat opening numbers of "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" ($91.6 million).

The only other new wide release of the weekend was Disney's "Million Dollar Arm," starring Jon Hamm. The movie ended up in fourth place with $10.5 million. Since it cost only $25 million, it's on track to become profitable. "Million Dollar Arm" has a 59% fresh rating.

Meanwhile, "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" has a worldwide total of $663 million and "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" has a worldwide total of $703 million.

Boring, hollow shell of a film. Wasn't even enough action to make it worth it for that. DOGzilla was made out to be some kind of hero but he surely killed thousands of people smashing through the city as well.

It was literally and emotionally a very distant film that made me have no attachment to any character. As people have said Bryan Cranston was the most 3 dimensional part in his small role. The script was as cheesey as Pacific Rim and the "coincidental" locations of all of the main characters that happened to be in the monsters path was standard Hollywood cheese. Why is anyone giving this film good ratings?

The only good thing was the cinematography. But no director should be getting payed millions without having that level of expertise.

f*ck this film.

I guess no one should tell Alex about the music video Andrew Garfield is in where he plays a transgender woman...

Anyone watching the new season of Louie?
Glad to see his show back on the air.
I also just realized he said "f*ck" without it being bleeped, and this was on the broadcast version. Is FX finally giving up on what few rules it had left? Normally you only hear fully uncensored episodes on late night Comedy Central shows. (Then again, after watching The Americans, and how much that show gets away with as far as nudity, I'm not surprised by this.)

Don't see how this got such respectable reviews. At it's worst the pacing was way too slow and at it's best it was just plain meh.

WHAT competition? The Million Dollar Arm? During what's considered pre-Summer? Wait till Days of Future past opens. We'll see if Godzilla can still compete.

@Cinema: thanks for the great review. Need more comments like that. You know, honest and mature. lol.

"The f*ck is Million Dollar Arm?"

What you get when the $64,000 Question goes out on a limb?

No worries. To be honest I only feel compelled to write a review when it's really good or really bad. Unfortunately this is the latter...

Thanks, cinema I wasn't expecting much either.

Its a movie about a big monster that smashes stuff, or at least that's what it is in American hands. For the Japanese, though, it's about something else: urban obliteration, mutations, fear of the looming unstoppable beast. Lots of psychological connotations and contexts that make Godzilla in Japan more than just "big lizard stomps sh*t".

Too bad then Americans haven't been able to transform Godzilla into a psychological symbol that can resonate with OUR collective, cultural fears, which is why any American Godzilla movie always boils down to "lizard in a china shop".

Maybe one day they'll get it.
