Mel Brooks Says "Blazing Saddles" Could Not Be Made Today Due to Political Correctness

Mel Brooks Says "Blazing Saddles" Could Not Be Made Today Due to Political CorrectnessSubmit Comment
In a new interview with Mel Brooks, the comedy legend spoke about some of his most popular movies, including "Blazing Saddles," which he says could not be made today due to political correctness.

"Political correctness restricts and restrains humor," he said. "Humor has to be very crazy and very free and very liberated. And dangerous!"

"Blazing Saddles" was released in 1974 and is known for its use of the N-word and stereotypes. The way Brooks says he got away with using the N-word is because Richard Pryor was one of the co-writers. Every time Brooks wanted to use the N-word, he would ask Pryor if it would be ok. Pryor would often respond, "You must" or "You have to."

Brooks went on to say that he also got lots of complaints from Jews for the "Springtime for Hitler" song from his "The Producers" Broadway show and movie. His response to his critics has always been the same, explaining that it's vital to mock people like Adolf Hitler.

As honorary chairman of the welcoming committee, it's my privilege to present a laurel and hearty handshake to our new... n*gger.

"Are we awake?"
"We don't know. Are we... black?"
"Yes we are."
"Then we're awake, but we're very puzzled."

He even had a go at the Irish too in the film. Something like "not him because he's Irish".

Funny flick.

I completely agree with Mel. Not so much on using the word "n*gger" (QT got away with it in his last movie despite the backlash) but for the scene toward the end with Dom Deluise and that musical number and the use of the word "faggot".

He is right you know. And that also restricts creative humor since you can't build off the jokes made about the real world. People are too f*cking sensitive.

Well, no sh*te ... especially considering that Richard Pryor was originally supposed to star in the character part handled by Cleavon Little.

Besides, who the bloody f*ck would watch this with 50 f*cking Cent Curtis "I can't act" Jackson in the f*cking title ?

He's right in part, because certain words are considered hate crimes these days, if not in Ammerica then in Europe, Canada and Australia, but much of the rest of the humor might be possible seeing as how Seth McFarlane gets way with worse every Sunday night.

Some rewrites and Blazing Sadddles might still work today.

Mel Brooks has a valid point. People are too uptight and too easily offended now, which is ironic because they are also desensitized to many things.

You can show someone footage of a beheading and many bat an eye, but if you said "It'd be hard to find a black person in LA who hasn't committed a felony", people everywhere would be up in arms.
